Kaduna Fallout: Ex-Governor El-Rufai and ADC Chieftains Face Police Summons Over Public Disturbance

The Nigeria Police, Kaduna State Command, has issued a summons to the immediate past Governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, along with several key members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)in Kaduna. The summons, dated September 4, 2025, requires their presence at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID)on September 8, 2025, to clarify allegations reported against them by complainants. These allegations include inciting disturbance of public peace, criminal conspiracy, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.
The letter of invitation was signed by Uzainu Abdullahi, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Alongside El-Rufai, other prominent individuals listed in the summons include Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (also known as 30), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (also known as Mikiya).

This police action follows a reported incident last Saturday, where suspected thugs allegedly disrupted the inauguration of the transition committee members of a coalition of opposition parties under the ADC in Kaduna State. The assailants, reportedly armed with cutlasses, clubs, and stones, attacked participants and vandalised properties. While the inauguration reportedly continued under tense conditions, the Kaduna State Police Command initially attributed blame for the incident to El-Rufai.
Since the incident, a heated exchange has ensued between the Kaduna State Government and El-Rufai. The government has accused the former governor of plotting to destabilise the state through provocative actions and inflammatory statements, an allegation El-Rufai has vehemently denied.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs,Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu, the Kaduna government asserted its resolve not to allow El-Rufai to plunge the state back into violence, division, and insecurity, stating it would not "fold its arms and allow a discredited former leader, who left the state in ruins, to ignite chaos and plunge the state into another era of ethno-religious tension, insecurity, and economic stagnation."

The Commissioner further described El-Rufai's recent activities, including convening what he termed an "illegal and chaotic" political meeting that reportedly ended in violence, as a calculated attempt to incite unrest and exploit old wounds following the defeat of his political allies in the August 16 by-elections. El-Rufai, in turn, has maintained his innocence and accused the ruling party in the state of attempting to silence the opposition.
Despite the police summons, members of the ADC, including the North-West Chairman of the party, Jafaru Sani (whose name is on the list), have insisted that they have not been officially served with the invitation. They claim to have only become aware of the summons through social media. Sani, when contacted, confirmed that most of them "only saw the statement on social media," declining further comments.
