In a statement shared on (formerly Twitter) account, Mr Adesina expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Kabiyesi Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom. Enthroned on April 2, 1960, he was one of the longest-serving and most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria,” he wrote.

The former minister of agriculture praised Oba Adetona’s reign which spanned over six decades, for being marked by peace, unity and development across Ijebuland and Ogun State.

“Kabiyesi Adetona ruled with strong commitment, remarkable dedication and impressive service, ensuring peace, unity, stability and progress across Ijebuland and Ogun State.”

Adesina described the monarch’s death as a huge loss to the people of Ijebu, the Ogun State government and the nation at large.

“May God comfort his family, the people of Ijebuland and the government of Ogun State. May Kabiyesi’s soul rest in peace.”

Oba Sikiru Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960 and died on Sunday at the age of 91.

He was buried on Monday in a ceremony at his residence in Ijebu-Ode, following Islamic rites.
