June 12: Nigerians Asked To Join Nationwide Protests To Mark Tinubu's Two Years Of Hunger, Insecurity | Sahara Reporters
In a statement released Monday by the group’s National Secretary, Francis Nwapa, the YRC urged Nigerians to “organise, mobilize and resist” what it called a “government of tyranny.”
The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), has issued a nationwide call for mass protests on June 12, 2025, to mark what it described as two years of "acute hunger, hardship and rising insecurity" under the President Bola Tinubu's administration.
In a statement released Monday by the group’s National Secretary, Francis Nwapa, the YRC urged Nigerians to “organise, mobilize and resist” what it called a “government of tyranny.”
The call to action comes as the country prepares to observe the 2025 Democracy Day, commemorating the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election.
“Organise, mobilise and resist this government of tyranny,” Nwapa declared.
The group asked Nigerians to resist Tinubu’s “government of tyranny [and] all Tinubu’s neoliberal policies”.
“We demand an end to insecurity. We demand an end to all neoliberal policies of the Tinubu regime. We demand an end to hunger and starvation,” Nwapa added.
The YRC's statement reflects growing discontent among segments of the Nigerian population as the country grapples with soaring inflation, food insecurity, and persistent attacks by armed groups.
Critics have pointed to the removal of fuel subsidies, currency devaluation, and rising cost of living as policy decisions that have disproportionately affected poor and working-class Nigerians.
YRC specifically condemned the continued killings of security personnel and civilians, linking it to broader issues of poverty and governance failures.
“End the slaughtering of our security forces. End hunger and poverty to end insecurity,” Nwapa said.
President Tinubu, who assumed office on May 29, 2023, has defended his economic reforms as necessary for long-term stability and growth.
However, opposition voices, labour unions, and civil society groups have frequently expressed concern about the social consequences of these policies.
The June 12 protest, according to YRC, is intended to reclaim the spirit of democracy by amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians.
The group is encouraging coordinated action across all states and sectors.
As the date approaches, it remains to be seen how widespread the mobilisation will be and what response it may provoke from the Nigerian authorities.
Previous protests under the Tinubu administration have seen varying levels of police response, with some drawing international attention over allegations of excessive force.
Organize, Mobilize and resist this government of tyranny.
