Tottenham Hotspur’s summer business is picking up pace, and one of last year’s lesser-seen arrivals could now be heading for the exit door. According to talkSPORT, Spurs are “open to selling striker Alejo Veliz this summer,” in what would be a quiet conclusion to a move that never quite ignited.

Signed from Rosario Central in 2023 for £13 million, Veliz came with promise and pedigree from the Argentine youth system. But after just eight appearances in a Tottenham shirt and a solitary goal, the 21-year-old’s future now lies elsewhere.

Although media speculation in Argentina has linked Racing Club with a move, talkSPORT are clear that, “the club have yet to receive a formal bid for the Argentine, with no potential deals currently at an advanced stage.”

Ben Jacobs echoed that sentiment, stating: “Suggestions Alejo Veliz is close to Racing are wide of the mark. Spurs are open to an exit, but haven’t received any formal bid. Nothing is advanced or concrete so far.”

Veliz has spent recent months on loan at Sevilla and Espanyol, but neither stint has shifted the dial. The striker’s lack of impact in La Liga reflects a player still adjusting to the demands of European football, and possibly in need of a restart back home.

Veliz’s situation is just one part of a wider transition at Spurs. Thomas Frank, replacing Ange Postecoglou after the Australian delivered a long-awaited trophy, is overseeing what looks like a measured reshaping of the squad.

Permanent deals for former loanees Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel are already confirmed. Kota Takai, the Japan international, has also joined, adding to a youthful and athletic profile the new boss seems keen to cultivate.

At the same time, there’s been movement out of north London too. Fraser Forster and Sergio Reguilon will depart at the end of June, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has joined Marseille. Veliz, it seems, could soon follow them out of the club, should a formal offer arrive.

Veliz’s departure would open further questions about Tottenham’s long-term attacking plan. Richarlison remains the main man up top, but with injuries and inconsistency plaguing his time at the club, depth is essential. Mathys Tel may offer one route forward, but others could yet be sought as Frank balances European and domestic priorities.

In Veliz’s case, the raw numbers do little to argue against a sale. Spurs made a reasonable investment, but in a high-tempo Premier League system, Veliz’s development never aligned with tactical needs. A move to Racing Club would offer a fresh start and possibly reignite his trajectory in more familiar surroundings.

For Tottenham fans, the Veliz story is a case of what might have been, or what never was. When he arrived, there was cautious excitement: a talented young striker from Rosario Central, who looked like he might fit the longer-term rebuild. But football moves quickly, and eight appearances with little impact speak volumes.

There’s no bitterness here. Spurs fans have seen this story before, a promising talent unable to settle in Europe. A loan, then another, and eventually a mutual understanding that it’s time to move on. If Veliz does return to Argentina, especially to Racing Club, most supporters will simply wish him well.

This summer’s reshuffle, led now by Thomas Frank, feels focused. Danso and Tel add solidity and promise, while Takai is one for the future. The focus appears to be more pragmatic, more system-led. For Veliz, there may never have been a fitting role under this vision.

In truth, it’s a clean break that suits all sides. And for Spurs, it’s just another step forward in a summer of considered, necessary evolution.
