The National Orthopaedic Hospital Jos, under the leadership of its medical director, Professor Inalegwu Onche, has reached a significant milestone, announcing that it is now fully equipped and operational, poised to deliver a comprehensive array of specialist medical services. This development marks a historic advancement in specialist healthcare provision throughout Nigeria's North Central region, promising advanced orthopaedic care to a substantial patient population.
The hospital's extensive range of services now encompasses critical surgical procedures such as joint replacement surgeries, trauma and spine care, and limb lengthening. Additionally, the facility offers reconstructive procedures, advanced physiotherapy, prosthetics, and vital emergency services, ensuring a holistic and integrated approach to orthopaedic health. These offerings are designed to address complex musculoskeletal conditions through cutting-edge medical interventions.
Professor Onche confirmed that the hospital has officially commenced full-scale clinical operations. The immediate impact of this readiness is evident in the registration of 736 patients, with 150 individuals currently awaiting various surgical interventions. This rapid patient engagement underscores the pressing regional demand for specialized orthopaedic care and highlights the hospital's robust capacity to meet these needs effectively.
The medical director further emphasized that this remarkable progress was achieved through collaborative efforts. He acknowledged the invaluable inter-agency and intergovernmental partnerships, specifically recognizing the pivotal support from the Plateau State Government, the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). Professor Onche also extended profound gratitude to Plateau State Governor Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, who personally financed the construction of the crucial access road and other essential infrastructure, significantly contributing to the hospital's operational readiness and accessibility.
Reinforcing the hospital’s advanced capabilities, Dr. David Wujika Ngwan, the director of clinical services, highlighted the breadth of active services and reiterated the institution’s preparedness to manage even the most intricate orthopaedic cases. Dr. Pokop W. Bupwatda, the Chief Medical Director of JUTH, commended Professor Onche's visionary leadership, expressing confidence that under his guidance, the National Orthopaedic Hospital Jos is set to become a preeminent institution, potentially surpassing other orthopaedic hospitals in the country. Dr. Bupwatda pledged JUTH's unwavering institutional support in the hospital's journey towards achieving excellence. Furthermore, Professor Onche confirmed that all departments within the hospital are now fully staffed, further solidifying its capacity to deliver high-quality patient care.
