Joe Jonas has had his finger in various pies over the last two decades, with the former Diney star’s most notable outings coming with the Jonas Brothers and DNCE after his successful stint on Camp Rock. Having rekindled his sibling group a couple of years back, Jonas ends another long wait with ‘Music For People Who Believe In Love’, his second solo album.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this is a far cry from the polished, somewhat routine ‘Fastlife’, his 2011 debut. While that record explored themes of love, sex and relationship breakdowns over infectious club-ready electro-pop and R&B, ‘Music For People Who Believe In Love’ goes deeper.
Focusing on self-improvement and fatherhood, Jonas experiments with a genre-bending sound incorporating slick ‘90s country and alternative pop.
Kicking things off with Parachute, an infectious synth-heavy banger about overcoming heartbreak, complete with heavily Auto-Tuned vocals, Jonas pivots to Work It Out, an optimistic, upbeat track detailing Jonas’s healing journey following his divorce.
The reflective folk-pop ballad My Own Best Friend offers a journey into compassion for oneself, displaying Jonas at his most vulnerable. “Take what's left and build a bridge again / Oh, and I'll take the steps to be my own best friend / My own best friend,” he sings during a major highlight. The Sierra Ferrell collaboration Sip Your Wine is a punchy folk-country duet with soft yet addictive charm.
But with these highs come the inevitable lows. Jonas’s vocals are fabulous on Heart By Heart, a believably raw and honest co-write with Lewis Capaldi that, oddly, doesn’t hit the spot. The guitar-driven Honey Blonde is also a bore and, zooming out, ‘Music For People Who Believe In Love’ is a real mixed bag. When it’s good it’s great, but too often it relies on bland filler.
