Fashion Commentator Emmy Collins Delves into 1960s Style and Influence

The enduring appeal of 1960s fashion is vividly brought to life in the collections of Emmy Collins, a London/Lagos-based designer renowned for his deep-rooted inspiration from that iconic decade. This passion was recently showcased when the brand presented its showroom collections in Ikoyi, Lagos, attracting prominent fashion enthusiasts, including notable figures such as Dr. Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace. The event highlighted Collins' consistent dedication to a design theme that resonates with the saying that fashion runs full circle.
Emmy Collins, the Creative Director of the brand, is forthright about his profound connection to the 1960s. "I always say that I’m stuck in the 60s. I can’t get out of the 60s. So, all my inspirations come from the 60s," he stated. Collins elaborated on his creative process, saying, "Every collection is inspired by the 60s. What I do is that I’m exploring the 60s. And for me, I don’t believe that I even have enough time on this earth to explore the 60s – I will be exploring it till I die." This unwavering focus underscores his commitment to thoroughly mining the era for creative stimulus.
Beyond aesthetics, Collins champions a specific philosophy of fashion. He believes that "This is actually what fashion should be; freedom of expression." He further explained, "Sometimes, you can actually tell who someone is just by how he dresses – someone who’s not afraid to express themselves through fashion." Critiquing contemporary trends, Collins added, "However, the trend today is that people tend to dress according to other people which shouldn’t be as everyone has their choices of style and what suits me may not look good on another person." His perspective advocates for individuality and personal style over conformity.
Looking ahead, the Emmy Collins brand is set to expand its offerings. The Creative Director revealed plans to launch a complete womenswear range. This new collection is anticipated to be unveiled in September with a dedicated runway show, marking a significant development for the brand as it continues to explore the vast fashion sphere inspired by the 60s.
