JJ Redick's Lakers Future After NBA Playoff Loss Gets Major Update
A season that had the makings of something special came to a screeching halt on Wednesday, as the Los Angeles Lakers were dominated 4-1 by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening round of the playoffs.
With the team's season over, the Lakers are expected to have one of the more eventful offseasons in the NBA. Not only are they awaiting a decision from four-time NBA MVP LeBron James, who was unwilling to commit to playing anymore despite having a $52.6 million player option, but they also are also hoping five-time NBA All-Star Luka Doncic signs an extension when he becomes eligible on Aug. 2.
Although the Lakers pulled off a blockbuster three-team trade for him, they did so without knowing if he'd sign up to be in Los Angeles once his player option rolls around after 2025-26.
While a first-round exit for a team with two of the league's biggest stars is viewed as a letdown, a report by The Athletic's Jovan Buha and Sam Amick revealed that first-year head coach JJ Redick is still safe.
"Despite the early playoff exit, Redick’s job is safe, and the Lakers are optimistic about his future with the franchise, team sources told The Athletic," read the report.
This report comes after Redick, who had no coaching experience outside of youth basketball before taking the job, took heat for playing the same five players for the entire second half of Game 4 of the series. It also comes after Redick stormed out of a press conference when asked about the move, which saw the lineup get outscored by 13 points.
However, in Redick's defense, the report revealed that the organization was well aware there would be "growing pains."
So, considering this, Redick will have all offseason to learn from his mistakes, while also helping provide input as to what moves the team can make to make a run.
The Lakers have advanced past the first round just once since winning the title in 2020. As for Redick, he is expected to head into year two of a four-year, $32 million deal.
