Jessica Henwick's $10M Thriller: Officially Outshines Game of Thrones Debut!

Jessica Henwick has built an impressively diverse filmography, appearing in more major franchises than most actors, a testament to her range and ability to embody various roles. Over the years, Henwick has secured parts in the Star Wars franchise, Game of Thrones, the Marvel Universe, The Matrix films, and she voices a character in Blade Runner: Black Lotus. She also featured in the second Knives Out movie, Glass Onion, and is slated to star in the final two seasons of the Apple TV+ show Silo. Her latest project brings her to the Netflix series Vladimir, an eight-episode show where she plays Cynthia, wife to Vladimir (Leo Woodall). The series revolves around the couple moving to a new town where Vlad attracts the attention of a seasoned professor, played by Rachel Weisz, sparking an intense fantasy.

Henwick's journey into the Star Wars universe for 'The Force Awakens' was a six-month-long audition process for the coveted lead role of Rey. Having an agent, she bypassed the public casting call, despite knowing thousands of hopefuls were seen. Though the role ultimately went to Daisy Ridley, director J.J. Abrams recognized Henwick's talent and specifically wrote a character named Jess for her. This character, Jess Pava, has since developed a significant life outside the film, appearing in comic books and novels, much to Henwick's delight, who describes the Star Wars fandom as one of the most beautiful she's encountered.

The 'Star Wars' audition proved to be a pivotal moment for Henwick, leading directly to her role in the iconic series 'Game of Thrones'. The same casting director, Nina Gold, who had been impressed during the 'Star Wars' finals, took Henwick under her wing. After not securing the lead in 'Star Wars', Gold promised to bring her in for 'Game of Thrones'. Henwick was subsequently auditioned for every possible role before finally landing the part of Nymeria Sand, crediting Gold for being a strong advocate for her career.

Beyond major franchises, an independent Australian film, 'The Royal Hotel', has also profoundly impacted Henwick's career. Released in 2023, the film, directed by Kitty Green and co-starring Julia Garner, features Henwick as an American backpacker working at a remote Australian pub. Despite its smaller footprint compared to blockbusters, Henwick asserts that 'The Royal Hotel' garnered significant industry attention, particularly from auteur directors. She attributes its impact to its timely subject matter, Kitty Green's rising profile, Julia Garner's talent, and the exceptional male cast, making it a film that constantly circulates within industry circles.

Similarly, her portrayal of Colleen Wing in the Marvel Universe (across 'Iron Fist', 'The Defenders', and 'Luke Cage') was transformative. This role propelled Henwick onto financiers' lists, opening doors to projects she wouldn't have been considered for previously. The role also shifted her perspective on martial arts. Initially wary of martial arts roles due to the perceived pressure and expectation as an Asian actor, playing Colleen Wing compelled her to embrace it. This decision led to a surge of action film offers for years afterward. Furthermore, Colleen Wing, being the character most resembling Henwick, brought her the experience of significant public recognition and fame.

Henwick's career continues to evolve with anticipation for her A24 film 'How to Make a Killing' and teases for future seasons of 'Silo', demonstrating her wide-ranging appeal across various genres and production scales.
