James Martin's Emotional Tribute: Chef Recalls 'Legendary' 'Pinch Me' Moment

On a recent episode of ITV's Saturday Morning, renowned TV chef James Martin, 53, paid a deeply moving tribute to Michel Roux Snr, a figure he described as a culinary "legend" whose passing left a significant void. Joined by fellow cooking experts Asma Khan and Kate Austen, alongside vocalist Russell Watson, James Martin took the opportunity while addressing viewer questions to reflect on the professional moment that evoked the most profound sense of nervousness in his illustrious career.
Despite cultivating a strong bond with Michel Roux Snr, who served as a vital guide and mentor throughout his professional journey, James Martin candidly admitted that cooking for the master chef always necessitated elevating his culinary prowess. Michel Roux Snr, the celebrated French culinary expert and esteemed restaurant owner, passed away in 2020 at the age of 78, a loss that still resonates with Martin. "After 32 years of television, there's one chef that made me nervous and that was Michel Roux Snr. Nobody else," James revealed, as reported by the Mirror. He further elaborated, "We lost him sadly about five years ago. He was an ex-mentor and a boss of mine. A friend and a legend. But even as a friend, I still had to up my game."
James Martin recounted how he would meticulously prepare whatever Michel Roux Snr requested. Among his most cherished memories, he vividly recalled preparing a classic French delicacy at Roux's residence in the south of France. "I remember doing crêpes Suzette at his house in the south of France. I remember cooking quail. One of the best, we've shown it on the show before, a whole VT from his house," he reminisced. "We cooked a barbecued quail, looking out towards Saint-Tropez. One of the best days I've had in my life. You have pinch yourself moments in life and TV has given me the opportunity to do that, certainly meeting amazing chefs."
Michel Roux Snr's immense impact on the culinary world is undeniable. He gained widespread fame for co-founding La Gavroche restaurant in Sloane Square in 1967 with his brother Albert, an establishment that rapidly earned recognition as the "godfather of modern cuisine." La Gavroche achieved legendary status as the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded a Michelin star in 1974. Michel Roux Snr's exceptional culinary skills and dedication enabled him to secure an unprecedented three stars for the establishment during his career, in addition to achieving another three stars for The Waterside Inn, further solidifying his legacy as a titan of gastronomy.
The Saturday Morning episode also featured other culinary highlights, with James Martin preparing a calf's liver, moules marinière, and a New York-style cheesecake, much to the delight of Russell Watson. Kate Austen showcased her skills by crafting a saffron risotto with pan-fried scallops and a chilli oil, while Asma Khan presented a delectable Indian prawn recipe, rounding out a diverse and engaging culinary broadcast.
