The Oklahoma City Thunder locked up their franchise's first championship since relocating. Ever since, they have worked diligently to lock up the core that got them there.
Reigning NBA and Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got his payday on July 1. The news was broken by Shams Charania.
The NBA insider announced, "Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed to a four-year, $285 million super maximum contract extension with the championship Oklahoma City Thunder through 2030-31, sources tell ESPN. This is now the richest annual salary for a player in league history."
On Wednesday, it was another core member's turn to get the money bags. This time, it was Chet Holmgren who was favorably rewarded for his role on the Thunder.
Charania wrote, "Oklahoma City Thunder star and 2025 NBA champion Chet Holmgren has agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach $250 million, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN."
The now locks up two of the three players who are viewed as the Thunder's core pieces. The only one remaining if Jalen Williams. Charania reassured everyone that move is on its way as well.
"Oklahoma City officials will move toward locking in All-NBA superstar Jalen Williams, who has momentum in his rookie extension talks," the ESPN insider added.
While Williams may not be in a comfortable financial position like the other two just yet, the Thunder star found his own peace with something else. Holmgren picks up the tab for everyone next go-around.
Williams posted the news report of Holmgren getting his new contract on his Instagram story with just three words attached. Those were, 'Dinner on 7.' For those unaware, Chet wears that number.
The Thunder forward will have his fun now, but when the script is flipped in the near future, Holmgren can come right back at him with the same suggestion.
