Ja Morant Trade Frenzy: Grizzlies Open to Offers

The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly entertaining trade offers for their two-time All-Star point guard, Ja Morant, ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline. Morant's seven-year tenure in Memphis has been a roller coaster, marked by significant achievements such as Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Player awards, alongside numerous highlight-reel plays. However, the past three seasons have seen his career overshadowed by multiple off-court issues, suspensions, and various injuries. Sources indicate a strained relationship with the organization's new coach, Tuomas Iisalo, and a one-game suspension earlier this season for conduct detrimental to the team. Morant, 26, is said to feel alienated by teammates post-suspension and has reportedly communicated to players around the league and former coaches that he no longer wishes to play for Memphis.
Morant's on-court performance has seen a noticeable decline this season, with him averaging career lows in minutes, rebounds, and both 2- and 3-point percentages. His scoring has dropped to 19.0 points per game, the lowest since his rookie season in 2019-20. He is also shooting a career-low 40% from the field and a dismal 21% from beyond the arc. Among 134 players with comparable shot attempts, Morant ranks 133rd in effective field goal percentage. Historically, Morant's greatest strength has been his elite ability to drive to the rim; in the 2021-22 season, he ranked fourth in made field goals in the restricted area. However, he is now taking fewer shots at the basket and more from mid-range, with his dunks per game declining from 0.96 during his All-Star seasons to 0.39. This statistical regression, combined with his frequent injuries and off-court controversies, significantly reduces Morant's trade value, despite his past All-NBA second team selection and MVP votes.
Trading Morant presents several challenges for Memphis. The point guard position is exceptionally deep across the league, limiting the number of teams genuinely needing a player of Morant's caliber. For instance, the Washington Wizards, a potential suitor, recently acquired Trae Young without surrendering any draft compensation to the Atlanta Hawks. Financially, Morant has three years remaining on his contract, with salaries of $39.5 million, $42.2 million, and $44.9 million respectively. This is a more manageable figure than the potential $237 million extension he would have qualified for if he had made All-NBA in 2022-23, a detail that now favors Memphis in the "apron era." However, his consistent availability issues, having played fewer than 60 games for three consecutive seasons, remain a concern. Teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves, despite a vacancy, are over the first apron and lack first-round picks, while the Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings, with draft capital and flexibility, find Morant's addition misaligned with their rebuilding timelines.
Despite the complexities, Memphis holds a strong negotiating position due to its substantial asset pool, including nine first-round picks and six second-rounders moving forward. The Grizzlies famously traded Desmond Bane last offseason for four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round swap. With their own first-rounder in each of the next seven drafts and currently holding the 10th-best lottery odds, the Grizzlies have flexibility. General Manager Zach Kleiman has previously stated the team needs Morant to be a "consistent, All-NBA-caliber player" to achieve high-end outcomes. The organization is exploring multiple paths, including building around promising young players such as Cedric Coward, Zach Edey, Jaylen Wells, and Cam Spencer alongside 2023 Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr., while also remaining open to continuing with Morant as a central figure in their retooling.
NBA insiders have proposed four potential trade scenarios for Morant. The first involves the Miami Heat acquiring Ja Morant, with the Grizzlies receiving Tyler Herro and Simone Fontecchio. This deal is predicated on the "Heat culture" rejuvenating Morant and Miami's need for offensive upside, given their struggles to finish in the top 10 in offensive rating since 2019-20. The combined salaries offer a clean financial fit, eliminating the need for draft picks. However, Morant's potential aversion to Miami's new offensive system, which reportedly mirrors the one he disliked in Memphis, and Herro's injury history and impending extension talks pose concerns. An alternative suggested by analysts would see the Grizzlies acquire Terry Rozier (if permitted) and a 2029 protected first-round pick instead of Herro for better salary relief and draft compensation.
A second proposal, a three-team deal, sends Ja Morant to the Milwaukee Bucks. In return, the Memphis Grizzlies would receive Kyle Kuzma and Kevin Porter Jr., while the Detroit Pistons get Gary Harris and cash considerations. This trade aims to provide the Bucks with an upside play to maximize Giannis Antetokounmpo's prime. While the deal offers salary savings for Memphis, especially if Porter declines his player option in 2026-27, analysts note that Morant has been less effective than Porter this season. The proposed 2026 first-round pick swap, intended to move Memphis up from the 18th pick to potentially 10th, is considered to have little tangible value, especially as Milwaukee would likely make the playoffs post-trade. This scenario is critiqued for potentially leaving Memphis with only Kuzma as a significant asset.
The third proposal sees the Toronto Raptors acquiring Ja Morant in exchange for Immanuel Quickley, Ochai Agbaji, and a 2026 first-round pick (top-14 protected). The Raptors, who are strong defensively (third in rating) but weak offensively (20th), would be taking a calculated risk on an undervalued former All-Star to upgrade their point guard position. Morant offers considerably more upside than Quickley, who has been deemed "fine but unspectacular" since joining Toronto. Although Quickley's contract, extending for three more years at $32.5 million annually, might be considered slightly over market, this deal could be beneficial for Memphis, particularly if the Morant situation has become toxic and a fresh start is paramount. Receiving a protected 2026 first-rounder in a potentially loaded draft is an attractive prospect.
Finally, a complex four-team trade involves the Minnesota Timberwolves receiving Ja Morant, with the Memphis Grizzlies getting Rob Dillingham and Naz Reid. The Washington Wizards would acquire Terrence Shannon Jr., and the Utah Jazz would receive Mike Conley and cash considerations. This proposal highlights the significant difficulty for the Timberwolves to acquire Morant without dismantling their core. While Reid is presented as the "least painful" player for Minnesota to lose, analysts question the value of acquiring a "depreciating player" like Morant for a key contributor like Reid, especially given concerns about Morant's fit with Anthony Edwards and the "disastrous" development of Dillingham. The necessity of rerouting multiple players to manage roster spots further complicates this scenario, making it less appealing for Memphis.
Considering all proposed deals, the trade with the Toronto Raptors emerges as the most appealing for Memphis. While the Miami scenario involving Rozier and a protected first-round pick offers salary relief, the Raptors deal provides Memphis with a reliable starter in Immanuel Quickley, who is under a manageable contract for the next four seasons, and a valuable 2026 first-round pick. This allows Memphis to secure both a solid immediate contributor and future draft capital, aligning with their strategy to either retool with Morant or build around their emerging young talent. The Raptors, in turn, gain an extra year of financial freedom by swapping Quickley for Morant and acquire a high-ceiling playmaker who, alongside Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and potentially Brandon Ingram, could significantly elevate their contention status in the Eastern Conference.
