Iwobi Shatters Nigerian Premier League Record in Arsenal vs. Fulham Thriller

Alex Iwobi has officially etched his name into the history books of the Premier League, becoming the Nigerian player with the most appearances in the esteemed English top-flight. This significant milestone was achieved when he featured for Fulham against his former club Arsenal at Craven Cottage on Saturday, marking his 299th Premier League game.
Before this historic match, the versatile midfielder was tied with Shola Ameobi, both having amassed 298 appearances. Iwobi's participation against Arsenal propelled him to an undisputed first place, surpassing Ameobi's long-standing record. His Premier League journey began on October 27, 2015, when he made his debut for Arsenal against Swansea City. Over the years, he has accumulated his appearances playing for three different clubs: Arsenal, Everton, and currently, Fulham.
Since joining Fulham from Everton in January 2023, the 29-year-old Super Eagles star has enjoyed a consistent and impactful career at Craven Cottage. Under coach Marco Silva, Iwobi has been a regular starter, consistently delivering strong performances for the Cottagers. Despite playing all 90 minutes in the record-breaking fixture, he could not prevent Fulham from suffering a 1-0 loss to the Gunners.
Iwobi's achievement sets a high bar for future Nigerian players in the Premier League. Following his 299 appearances and Shola Ameobi's 298, the list of top Nigerian appearance makers includes other notable names. Kanu Nwankwo, another former Arsenal player, holds the third position with 273 appearances. Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who is also celebrated as the highest-scoring Nigerian in the Premier League, comes in fourth with 252 appearances. Rounding out the top five is Chelsea legend Mikel Obi, with 249 games played. Given Iwobi's age and continued form, it is anticipated that his record will be a formidable one to challenge for any Nigerian player in the near future.
