It's time for (Summer League) Basketball: Spurs vs Mavericks

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

After a 41 point beat-down of the summer Sixers on Thursday, the summer Spurs are back in action today, facing Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, who defeated Bronny James and the Lakers 87-85 in their first game. Flagg had a poor shooting effort in that game, going 5-21, but his talent and physical gifts were pretty evident if you watched the game closely, and he should have a much more productive effort this afternoon (assuming he plays).

It should be the the first time to see Dylan Harper on the court in a Spurs uniform, as he has been held out of all of the summer league games so far with a minor groin tweak. The matchup of Harper and Flagg is one of the most anticipated matchups of Las Vegas Summer League, but don’t be surprised if both players are a little rusty after not playing much basketball for a while.

The biggest story of the Silver and Black summer squad has been the breakout performance of David Jones-Garcia, who has been impressive on both ends of the floor, but mostly turning heads with his scoring ability. He can hit triples, but he’s also a skilled driver, and while his passing is a work in progress, there is quite a bit of progress. He’s on track to become one of the big stories of Summer League this year, and could earn himself a regular roster spot or a two-way contract with his stellar play. Let’s hope it’s in San Antonio.

The Sixers announce that they are disbanding their Summer League team this year after losing to the Spurs by 41 on Thursday night.
