ISWAP's Top Propagandist and Media Operatives Eliminated in Deadly Army Strike

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has officially confirmed the death of its chief photographer and senior raid commander, Abu Salim al-Barnawi. He was reportedly killed during a failed assault on a Nigerian military base in Cross Kauwa, Borno State, or within the Lake Chad Basin area, last week, specifically identified by Operation Hadin Kai as July 12, 2026.

The confirmation of his death was disclosed in a report by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst covering the Lake Chad region. ISWAP itself circulated an obituary announcing al-Barnawi's death, confirming he was among the fighters neutralized by Nigerian troops during the attempted attack. This was further corroborated by Operation Hadin Kai, whose troops are credited with repelling the infiltration.

Abu Salim al-Barnawi served as one of the terrorist group’s most prominent media operatives. His responsibilities included overseeing photography and video production, which were critical for documenting combat operations and producing propaganda materials used for recruitment and internal mobilization. Before his transition into propaganda activities, he commanded several cross-border attacks into neighboring Cameroon, leading operations against security forces.

The Nigerian military, through Captain Mohammed Goni, the acting Military Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, stated that al-Barnawi was killed alongside other members of the ISWAP mobile media team, identified as Abu Umar Khattab and Abu Khalid Usman. During the operation, troops recovered a video camera and other items from the scene, which had been previously announced by the military.

Al-Barnawi’s death is regarded as a significant setback to ISWAP’s propaganda machinery, as he coordinated the production and distribution of the group’s operational videos and other media materials. Military statements emphasized that the loss of such seasoned operatives further degrades the terrorists’ operational capability, weakens their propaganda apparatus, erodes their command structure, and diminishes their ability to spread extremist narratives and fabricate an illusion of strength. The reported obituary issued by the insurgent group reflected the increasing pressure being exerted by Operation Hadin Kai and the difficulty it faces in replacing experienced operatives.

Beyond al-Barnawi and his media team, the military reported inflicting heavy casualties during the encounter. These included the reported killing of a Syrian fighter and an ISWAP commander identified as Aliyu Zabarmari, with another foreign fighter said to be missing. Captain Goni reaffirmed the military’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling Boko Haram and ISWAP networks and restoring peace across Nigeria’s North-East.
