The New York Islanders made significant moves before Friday’s NHL trade deadline, acquiring veteran center Brayden Schenn from the St. Louis Blues. This acquisition is aimed at bolstering the Islanders’ forward depth and adding crucial scoring power as they push for a playoff spot. Coinciding with this trade, the Islanders announced a three-year contract extension for versatile third-line center Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who was previously a pending unrestricted free agent. The deal for Pageau is valued at an average annual value of $4.85 million, concluding his prior six-year, $30 million contract.

In exchange for Schenn, the Islanders sent under-performing top-six wing Jonathan Drouin to the Blues, along with a first-round draft pick, a third-round pick, and 20-year-old goalie prospect Marcus Gidlof. Schenn, a 34-year-old left-shooting player, is in the sixth season of an eight-year, $52 million deal. He approved the trade to the Islanders, waiving his 16-team no-trade list. Drouin, who was a key offseason signing for first-year general manager Mathieu Darche and in the first season of a two-year, $8 million deal, has struggled this season, recording only three goals and 18 assists in 55 games, including a 38-game goal drought.

They gave me an hour, hour and a half notice.” He quickly spoke with family and friends before meeting with coach Patrick Roy and GM Mathieu Darche to approve the move. Schenn boasts an impressive career, with 290 goals and 423 assists in 1,083 games over 17 NHL seasons. He spent the last nine seasons with the Blues, and has also played for the Kings and Flyers. This season, he has contributed 12 goals and 16 assists in 61 games.

Schenn is expected to join the Islanders for their game against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night at SAP Center, concluding their four-game road trip. The Islanders (35-23-5) are currently in third place in the Metropolitan Division, fighting to maintain a playoff position despite recent road losses to the Ducks (5-1) and Kings (5-3). General Manager Darche had also made two earlier pre-deadline deals, acquiring third-pair defenseman Carson Soucy from the Rangers on January 26 and top-six wing Ondrej Palat from the Devils the following day. The Islanders' remaining pending UFAs include Anders Lee, defenseman Tony DeAngelo, and goalie David Rittich.

Brayden Schenn is known for his steady offensive production and physical play throughout his career. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, his left-handed shot can be deployed at either center or wing. He is likely to slot in as the second-line center, aiming to alleviate responsibilities from rookie Cal Ritchie. Schenn's impressive faceoff win percentage of 54.2 ranks 25th in the NHL, highlighting his prowess in critical puck possession situations.

Beyond his on-ice capabilities, Schenn is anticipated to be a valuable off-ice addition to the Islanders’ core of veteran leaders. Having served as the Blues captain for three seasons and helping the team secure the Stanley Cup in 2019, he carries a reputation as a culture setter. However, concerns exist regarding Schenn's recent performance dip, with his production this season (12 goals, 16 assists in 61 games) being below his career averages. His defensive game is considered average at best, which, coupled with his age (he turns 35 in the offseason) and the fact he is signed through 2028, raises some questions about his long-term value and consistency for the Islanders.
