International Nurses Day, observed annually on May 12, honors the vital contributions of nurses worldwide in sustaining healthcare systems. In recognition of the occasion, a visit to South Africa’s largest hospital revealed the passion, challenges, and unwavering dedication of nurses on the frontlines.

Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients, playing a critical role in assessing and prioritizing care. “When patients arrive, nurses conduct vital signs and determine if their condition is critical, priority one, or priority two,” explained one nurse. “Just seeing a nurse can bring comfort—patients feel at ease knowing they’re being cared for.”

However, the profession is not without struggles. Earlier this year, South Africa’s Department of Health raised concerns over rising criminal incidents affecting healthcare workers. Despite these risks, nurses remain committed to their oath.

One nurse emphasized that patient care transcends personal feelings. “As nurses, we took an oath. We don’t judge—if a patient comes in, they are a patient, not a criminal,” she said. “Even if that person harmed my own child, I must treat them with the same care.”

This level of compassion defines the profession. A nurse with 15 years of experience, shared how nursing extends beyond hospital walls. “We carry our patients’ struggles with us, even at home. When a patient isn’t well, it weighs on us.”

Nurses highlighted the emotional toll of their work, calling for better mental health resources. “We grieve with families, but we don’t always get to debrief,” said one nurse. “Emotional support is crucial so we can continue providing quality care.”

Despite the challenges, nurses find fulfillment in their service. “I enjoy being celebrated because I know I’m giving my best to the community,” she shared.

As International Nurses Day draws attention to their sacrifices, South Africa’s nurses continue to serve with resilience, proving that their compassion remains the backbone of healthcare.
