Inside 'Criminal Minds: Evolution': Star Reveals Intense Fight to Cast Connor Storrie in Season 19
Season 19 of the Paramount+ series 'Criminal Minds: Evolution' intensifies the investigative drama as the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) pursues a new serial killer known as The Fan, while Elias Voit endeavors to atone for his past actions. Amidst these high-stakes cases, Field Agent Luke Alvez, portrayed by Adam Rodriguez, navigates a profoundly personal loss that compels him to rely on the support of his BAU team. The narrative structure intentionally builds suspense around Alvez's struggle, initially hinting at a direct threat to him or a close person, before revealing his grief stems from the loss of his beloved canine partner, Roxy.
Adam Rodriguez, who not only stars as Alvez but also directed Episode 4, 'Heated Rivalry,' shared insights into the emotional depth required for his character this season. He discussed the immense challenge of filming the emotional scenes related to Roxy's death, particularly with a non-speaking canine co-star. Rodriguez admitted to being 'always intimidated by those scenes' due to the difficulty of authentically accessing and portraying such deep emotional states, especially amidst the technical demands of a film set. He lauded director Anthony Viietro, who also serves as the show's director of photography, for his exceptional work in handling these sensitive moments, allowing the actors to fully explore the emotional landscape.
Beyond his character's personal journey, Rodriguez also detailed his experience connecting with UnSub (guest star Richard Cabral) in a unique way that other characters in the episode did not. He described Cabral as a 'tremendous actor' with a 'deep soul' who brought an authentic connection to their shared scenes. Both characters, experiencing profound pain, albeit through different life choices, find a moment of unexpected understanding. Rodriguez credits Viietro again for allowing these scenes to play out organically, fostering a meaningful connection that revealed significant facets of Luke's character and the experiences of many soldiers.
Rodriguez played a crucial role in the casting of Connor Storrie, who guest stars in Season 19 and whose role expanded beyond its initial single-episode scope. As a director, Rodriguez identified Storrie as his 'first choice' for a character needing to appear both 'dangerous in appearance but could also be vulnerable.' He highlighted Storrie's strong performance and the support he received from showrunner Erica Messer to push for his casting. Storrie's career subsequently 'exploded' after shooting his scenes, to Rodriguez's satisfaction, confirming his confidence in his casting instincts.
The expansion of roles for characters like Connor Storrie and Elias Voit, who began as one-off appearances, is attributed to the show's transition to a streaming platform. Rodriguez explains that the additional 15 to 20 minutes of screen time available on Paramount+ compared to the traditional network format on CBS allows for deeper character development for the BAU regulars and more extensive exploration into the motivations and minds of the killers. This extended format enables the creative team to let characters 'breathe and grow,' extending their storylines when they 'pop' and demonstrate further potential.
Looking ahead, Luke Alvez will continue to process his loss throughout Season 19, demonstrating personal growth with the unwavering support of Garcia and the rest of the BAU team. Rodriguez emphasized the team's dedication to the fans, assuring them that after 19 seasons, they are working harder than ever to deliver a compelling and satisfying experience, reinforcing the themes of camaraderie and resilience within the BAU.
