Indian Police Busts Drug Gang that used crypto and darknet

Published 2 weeks ago2 minute read

Indian police have busted a drug racket prevalent in several states of India, where the accused used dark net and cryptocurrencies to peddle “hybrid ganja”.

According to police, four individuals have been arrested in Hyderabad city of India, for running a secret drug-selling operation using advanced technology including dark net.

Police said that the main accused Harshvardhan Shrivastava, a 30-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, had allegedly gotten involved in illegal drug trade by investing Rs 40 lakh (4 million INR) stored in his cryptocurrency wallet.

On Tuesday, Hyderabad police arrested him for allegedly selling hydroponic ganja, a type of marijuana grown using special techniques.

As per the reports, the police also arrested three others who seemed to be involved in this racket. The individuals arrested included B. Srinivasa Rahul, 30, from Tamil Nadu, and two local drug sellers from Secunderabad: Abhishek, 26, and Dhawal, 29.

This network used the darknet (a hidden part of the internet) to buy drugs, paid for them using cryptocurrency (digital money) and hawala (an informal money transfer system), and sent the drugs through courier services to avoid getting caught.

The police believe this drug network is much bigger, with connections across India. They think this bust is just the beginning, and more details will come out as they investigate further.
