'In the Lost Lands' Finds Streaming Success on Hulu After Bombing at the Box Office

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

Earlier this year, a fantasy action epic starring two genre icons and based on the works of Game of Thrones legend George R.R. Martin was unleashed. If you have no memory of this, don’t blame yourself, as the action outing sadly landed with an unceremonious splat. However, thanks to streaming, the movie is now finding an audience as action fantasy fans flock to uncover the mystery of the lost lands...

MCU star Dave Bautista joins forces with fellow action movie icon Milla Jovovich for the fantasy epic from author George R.R. Martin, the creator behind the HBO sensation Game of Thrones. Based on the short story by Martin, finds Jovovich and Bautista as a witch and a warrior who find themselves fighting to survive in the titular arena. And it’s a place teaming with powerful magic, horrifying creatures, and merciless enemies.

The adaptation hails from the somewhat divisive director Paul W.S. Anderson, who reunites with Milla Jovovich following the Resident Evil franchise. The rest of the cast includes Arly Jover, Amara Okereke, Fraser James, Simon Lööf, and Deirdre Mullins alongside Jovovich and Bautista. In the Lost Lands has battled its way through bad reviews and box office failure to reach the #1 spot on Hulu, beating the likes of Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, the comedy Riff Raff, sci-fi outing Distant, and the Jason Statham action thriller Wrath of Man.

Unfortunately, In the Lost Lands was widely panned upon release. Despite being based on the works of the writer behind Game of Thrones and its slowly emerging franchise, as well as the best efforts of Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista, the action fantasy flick was savaged by critics, landing a rating of just 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. Combine this with the movie’s meek box office takings (just $6.1 million against a $55 million budget), and suddenly any hopes Martin had for sequels are quickly killed. MovieWeb’s own George Edelman declared In the Lost Lands “a mess,” saying...

“You would think an action-adventure fantasy movie starring two of the genres' more charismatic and accomplished stars from a short story by a beloved scribe would lead to a solid result. Sadly, In the Lost Lands is lesser than the sum of its parts. What exactly is missing though? Or didn't go right? As is often the case with movies, it's not entirely clear and we'd have to theorize, but the finished dish leaves much to be desired regardless of its enticing ingredients.”

While the response may have been negative, In the Lost Lands is clearly proving to be a sought-after adventure on streaming. You can check out the official synopsis below.

“Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and based on George R.R. Martin's short story, the story centers on a queen who, desperate to fulfill her love, makes a daring play: she sends the powerful and feared sorceress Gray Alys (Mila Jovovich) to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands in search of a magical power, where the sorceress and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Dave Bautista), must outwit and outfight man and demon.”
