IGP Yohuno visits Ablekuma North [Photos+Video]
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on Friday led a high-powered team to the Ablekuma North constituency to assess the security situation amid the ongoing parliamentary election rerun.
The IGP’s visit follows violent incidents recorded at some of the 19 polling stations involved in the rerun, including attacks on media personnel and a prominent political figure.
Two journalists — Kwabena Banahene Agyekum of the EIB Network and Sally of JoyNews — were assaulted while covering the polls. Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was also reportedly attacked by an irate group at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station.
The Electoral Commission had promised a peaceful and transparent process following months of legal disputes surrounding the December 2024 parliamentary results in the constituency, which left the seat vacant.
Despite the isolated incidents, electoral officials reported that voting continued smoothly in most polling centers, with calm but steady turnout observed.
The rerun is expected to determine the final occupant of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
