IGP Disu Unleashes Iron Fist: Swift Action Against Partisan Police in 2027 Election Showdown

Olatunji Disu has been sworn in as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria, following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun. During his swearing-in ceremony, IGP Disu outlined his immediate priorities, focusing on restoring security, improving officer welfare, and preparing for the establishment of state police.
A significant initiative launched by IGP Disu is the establishment of a seven-member steering committee, led by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, to develop a comprehensive framework for state policing.
This move comes in response to President Bola Tinubu's repeated calls for the creation of state police to combat Nigeria's escalating insecurity.
IGP Disu views state police not as a replacement for the existing Nigeria Police Force, but as a complementary structure aimed at strengthening national security through a partnership model. He emphasized that the NPF is prepared to contribute its expertise to ensure the success of this decentralised policing system.
The committee's mandate includes reviewing existing policing models domestically and internationally, proposing operational frameworks, and developing robust accountability mechanisms to uphold professionalism and public trust.
Other members include CP Bode Ojajuni, DCP Okebechi Agora, DCP Suleyman Gulma, ACP Ikechukwu Okafor, CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho, and retired CP Emmanuel Ojukwu.
Disu believes decentralised policing will enhance local intelligencegathering, facilitate rapid response to threats, and strengthen community-law enforcement relationships. It will also allow the federal government to concentrate on complex national crimes like terrorism and cybercrime.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, IGP Disu issued a stern warning to officers against partisanship, declaring a 'zero tolerance'policy for misconduct or abuse of authority. Any officer found compromising neutrality or violating electoral laws will face swift disciplinary action, potentially including prosecution.
The IGP stressed that the force's role is paramount to the credibility of elections and the stability of Nigeria's democracy. He pledged to protect democratic institutions, officials, voters, and critical infrastructure throughout the electoral process.
IGP Disu also acknowledged longstanding concerns regarding officers' working conditions, making a direct appeal to the Nigerian government for better equipment, housing, remuneration, pensions, and healthcare.
He asserted that a well-motivated force is essential for optimal performance, given the demanding and high-risk nature of police work.
In line with modernisation efforts, Disu outlined plans to invest in digital and cyber forensics, data analytics, surveillance technologies, and scientific crime scene management.
These measures are designed to build a more intelligence-led and technology-driven force capable of combating evolving criminal networks across Nigeria.
