IEBC urges Kenyans to ignore claims of electoral malpractices
In a press release sent to news rooms, the Commission said such utterances, are unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society like Kenya.
“While IEBC will constitute the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee as prescribed under Article 84 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, read together with Section 110 of the Elections Act, the Committee has jurisdiction only during the election period in accordance with the judgment of Sabina Chege Supreme Court Petition No. 23 (E026) of 2022,” read the statement.
While it should also be noted that the IEBC has not declared any elections, the Commission further adds that there is no gazettement or declaration that has been made to warrant such desirous political utterances and propaganda and that the country is not on a campaign period at the moment.
Meanwhile, IEBC maintains that it is now fully constituted and will engage with stakeholders including the political parties and leaders to discuss means and ways of restoring trust and confidence in the country’s electoral processes and outcomes.
Additionally, the Commission urges all stakeholders particularly those in the political arena to refrain from acts including speeches likely to erode trust and confidence in Kenya’s electoral processes, and instead work with IEBC to reinforce and strengthen that trust and confidence.
Further, IEBC assures members of the public and stakeholders that it shall safeguard its independence and impartiality while discharging its constitutional mandate and its functions as well as remain committed to ensuring free, fair and credible elections in accordance with the laws of Kenya and best practices.
In this regard, the Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya’s democracy and has appealed to the public to visit its website and social media platforms for accurate and up to date information.
