Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old activist, was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan 'Jon' Ross in Minneapolis during a protest against ICE raids. Her heartbroken widow, Rebecca Good, revealed that Renee was protesting against planned detentions of Somali migrants, stating, "We stopped to support our neighbors. We had whistles. They had guns." Rebecca highlighted Renee's strong Christian faith and their shared commitment to raising their six-year-old son with beliefs in compassion and kindness for all, regardless of background.

The incident occurred on a Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis. According to newly released video footage, Renee Good was shot three times after allegedly ignoring officers' demands to exit her vehicle. Agent Ross's cellphone video and surveillance footage show Good's maroon Honda Pilot blocking the street for approximately four minutes. Rebecca Good, a passenger, exited the vehicle and began filming, allegedly taunting Agent Ross by urging him to "show his face" and asking, "You want to come at us?" Rebecca later admitted encouraging her wife to confront the agents, crying, "I made her come down here, it's my fault." As tension escalated, Good was ordered to leave the car, but instead, she began revving the engine and drove off. Ross fired three shots, one piercing the front windshield, striking and killing Good. An agent was heard calling Good a "f***ing b***h" as the shots rang out. Good subsequently lost control of the SUV, crashing it into parked cars and a light pole.

Renee Good leaves behind three children, including her youngest son, who is now orphaned following his father's death in May 2023. Rebecca expressed her resolve to continue teaching their son Renee's values of building a better world, believing that those who acted with fear and anger need to be shown a better way. The couple had moved to Minnesota the previous year after a brief period in Canada, having fled the US after Donald Trump's election. Rebecca described finding a "vibrant and welcoming community" in Minneapolis, a place where she "finally found peace and safe harbor," which she now feels has been "taken from me forever." Friends of Good stated she was part of a network of activists actively resisting ICE, coordinated through her son's charter school, which embraced a "social justice first" approach. However, Good's mother, Donna Ganger, denied her daughter's involvement in such protests.

ICE agent Jonathan 'Jon' Ross, 43, is an Iraq War veteran who has served as an immigration officer since at least 2013 and a deportation officer since 2015. Six months prior to the Good shooting, Ross sustained severe injuries, requiring 20 to 33 stitches, after being dragged 100 yards by a car during the arrest of an illegal immigrant sex offender in Bloomington, Minnesota. Ross's father, Ed Ross, defended his son, describing him as a "committed, conservative Christian, a tremendous father, a tremendous husband." Neighbors characterized Ross as a hardcore MAGA supporter who previously displayed pro-Trump and 'Don't Tread On Me' flags. His family, including his Filipina immigrant wife, Patrixia, reportedly went into hiding after the incident, with a Special Response Team collecting personal belongings from their suburban Minneapolis home.

The shooting has ignited a fierce political and public debate. The Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, has staunchly defended Ross, characterizing his actions as self-defense and Good as a "victim of left-wing ideology" who used her vehicle as a weapon. Vance stated that Good's death was a "tragedy of her own making." President Donald Trump refused FBI cooperation with Minnesota officials on the investigation, labeling them "crooked" and criticizing Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz. Trump also alluded to alleged fraud within Minneapolis's large Somali population and suggested the presence of "paid agitators" at the protest.

Conversely, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other state and local officials have vehemently rejected the self-defense narrative, with Frey calling it "garbage" and "bulls**t." Mayor Frey defiantly told ICE to "get the f**k out of Minneapolis" and demanded that federal officials turn over information on Good's shooting to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
