Ibadan Under Siege: Police Tangle With Robbers in Violent Showdown

A notorious two-man armed robbery gang, responsible for terrorizing the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State and serially robbing bank customers, met their waterloo on Wednesday in a dramatic shootout with members of the police monitoring team. The incident, which caused pandemonium in areas like Oke-Ado and Imalefalafia, resulted in one robber being killed and the other critically injured and subsequently arrested.

The gang's criminal activities began earlier in the day at Anfaani, where they waylaid a Muslim cleric, popularly known as Alfa. The cleric, who was carrying motorcycle parts packed inside a sack, was shot by the robbers who allegedly mistook the contents for cash. After the shooting, the robbers proceeded to Imalefalafia. An eyewitness reported that they stopped at a vulcaniser stand, pretending to inflate their tyres, while the second robber engaged a female POS operator in conversation.

Alerted by several eyewitnesses, including Seye Adeniyi, who witnessed the shooting of Alfa, residents swiftly informed the police at Iyaganku. Citizens then bravely trailed the robbers to Imalefalafia. With the information gathered, policemen drafted to the area laid an ambush around Tribune House, where the robbers were suspected to be preparing for another operation.

Upon sighting the officers, one of the robbers drew his pistol and opened fire, injuring one of the policemen. The police returned fire, and with the collaborative efforts of bystanders, were able to apprehend the culprits. One of the robbers, identified as the gang leader and found with a backpack containing a pistol, cartridges, charms, bracelets, and large sums of cash, sustained fatal bullet wounds and died immediately. His accomplice, the 'Okada' pilot rider, was caught alive after significant effort, critically injured.

Another eyewitness, Mr. Olusesi Olusola, was among those who rushed the injured policeman to a nearby clinic. A senior police officer, who confirmed the incident anonymously in a telephone chat, stated that the critically injured robber is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital. Police officers are monitoring his recovery process, hoping to gather necessary information to assist in their investigation. The police had been on the trail of this gang, reportedly responsible for numerous criminal activities, including armed robbery, in the area. Authorities expressed hope that this successful operation would effectively end the gang's raids in Ibadan South-West and its adjoining communities.
