Ibadan Robbery Standoff: Police Kill One, Injure Another in Intense Gun Battle

A two-man robbery gang, allegedly responsible for terrorizing residents and bank customers in the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State, met their end in a dramatic shootout with a police monitoring team on Wednesday. The incident, which unfolded near the Tribune House at Imalefalafia area, resulted in one suspected armed robber killed and the other critically injured and subsequently arrested, causing panic and apprehension in the city.
The events began earlier in the day when the robbers reportedly waylaid a Muslim cleric, popularly known as Alfa, at Anfaani. The cleric was carrying motorcycle parts in a sack, which the robbers might have mistaken for cash, and was shot by them. Following this, the gang proceeded to Imalefalafia. An eyewitness recounted that the robbers stopped at a vulcaniser's stand, pretending to inflate their tyres, while the second robber engaged a female POS operator in conversation.
Seye Adeniyi, another eyewitness who witnessed the shooting of Alfa, stated that people in the area quickly alerted the police at Iyaganku and began trailing the robbers to Imalefalafia. Based on the information gathered, policemen were dispatched and set up an ambush around the Tribune House, where the robbers were suspected to be preparing for another operation. Upon sighting the police, one of the robbers drew a pistol and opened fire, injuring a police officer.
The police returned fire, and with the collaborative efforts of bystanders, managed to apprehend the robbers. One of the robbers, found with a backpack containing a pistol, cartridges, charms, and bracelets, sustained fatal bullet wounds and died on the spot. His accomplice, who was the motorcycle pilot rider, was caught alive after significant effort. Mr. Olusesi Olusola, another eyewitness, confirmed rushing the injured policeman to a nearby clinic, noting the fierce resistance from the deceased robber before he was overpowered.
A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, stating that a notorious armed robbery gang had engaged their men in a shootout at Imalefalafia. He further stated that the critically injured robber was receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital, with officers monitoring his recovery to obtain crucial information for their investigation. The police had been actively trailing this gang, believed to be responsible for numerous criminal activities and armed robberies in the area. Authorities expressed hope that this successful operation would bring an end to the gang's raids in Ibadan and its adjoining communities.
Further reports indicated pandemonium in the Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, where Oyo State Police Command operatives trailed the suspected armed robbers, engaging them in the gun duel. The apprehended robber was reportedly found with assorted charms on his body.
