IATA Makes History: Saadia Zahidi Named First Woman Director General

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced a landmark decision for global aviation with the appointment of Saadia Zahidi as its next Director General, effective 1 November 2026. This significant leadership change will see Zahidi become IATA's ninth Director General and, notably, the first woman ever to lead the influential airline industry body. Her elevation carries substantial weight, particularly for African aviation stakeholders, who anticipate fresh perspectives and strategic direction from the helm of the organization that represents the world's carriers.

Zahidi brings a wealth of experience to IATA, joining from the World Economic Forum (WEF) where she served as Managing Director and a Member of the Managing Board for over two decades. During her extensive tenure at the WEF, she founded and continues to lead its Centre for the New Economy and Society. Her diverse portfolio included overseeing the Forum's Global Communications Group, Global Programming Group, and its engagement strategies with academic institutions, civil society bodies, and various international organizations. Furthermore, she is the esteemed founder and co-author of several highly influential publications, including the Future of Jobs Reports, the Future of Growth Reports, the Global Gender Gap Reports, and Chief Economist Outlooks, showcasing her deep expertise in global economic and societal trends.

Her incoming role will fill the position currently held by Willie Walsh, who is set to conclude his tenure as Director General on 31 July 2026. To ensure a seamless transition, the IATA Board has appointed Sandrine Le Borgne, who presently serves as IATA's Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, as Interim Director General for the three-month period between Walsh's departure and Zahidi's arrival, from 1 August to 31 October 2026.

The continent's aviation sector has long contended with a myriad of challenges, including high operating costs, limited intra-African connectivity, significant sustainability pressures, and the slow pace of implementing the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). With a leader possessing deep expertise in areas such as economic transformation, workforce development, and gender inclusion, there is a strong expectation that Zahidi may champion the specific types of policy dialogue and strategic initiatives that African carriers, airports, and tourism authorities urgently require.
