IATA contends such levies would undermine airlines’ capacity to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, per verified association statements.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh emphasized aviation’s thin profit margins (averaging 3.4% in 2024) and noted the proposed levy could triple industry-wide profits. He referenced the existing Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as the sector’s established emissions framework, warning duplicate mechanisms would fragment global policy.

The association projects USD 4.7 trillion in sustainability investments through 2050, arguing new taxes would raise travel costs and reduce connectivity. IATA advocates instead for Sustainable Aviation Fuel production support, aligning with Ghana’s aviation decarbonization efforts under the Mahama administration’s climate policy.
