I’m convinced Star Wars is hiding’s biggest reveal in plain sight. Though details and trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu are still sparse, footage shown exclusively to audiences at this year’s Star Wars Celebration has revealed certain surprises, including Star Wars Rebels hero Garazeb Orrelios’ return, the involvement of the Hutts, and the very first look at Sigourney Weaver’s character.

Even so, the stars of the movie are still Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his young, tiny, green, sneaky, Force-wielding protégé, Grogu. The Mandalorian and Grogu will pick up where The Mandalorian season 3 left off, with Din and Grogu returning to their bounty-hunting roots, this time in service of the New Republic.

With the threat of the Imperial Shadow Council and Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return looming over the galaxy, things are about to get dicey. Grogu’s returning strength in the Force will no doubt play an important role in The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story, but what about his adopted Mandalorian side? How will that come into play in Star Wars’ upcoming film?

. While this may seem like an easily dismissible moment, it’s interesting to note that Din Djarin himself, Pedro Pascal, mentioned Grogu’s ability to swim during a brief interview with IMDb at this year’s Celebration, too.

“He’s a pretty damn good swimmer,” Pascal revealed, before looking off to the side and saying, “I think I may have gotten in trouble for that one.” Surely, this means that shot of Grogu swimming will have a wider impact on the story, and I think I know how.

In The Mandalorian season 3, Din Djarin, Grogu, and their allies retake Mandalore from Moff Gideon’s greedy clutches. While the Mandalorians’ legendary Darksaber may have been destroyed, one other legendary Mandalorian symbol still dwells beneath the planet's surface: the Mythosaur.

In Mandalorian history, the Mythosaur was a great and majestic beast that only the best and brightest Mandalorians could tame and ride. At some point in Mandalore’s long, violent history, the beast was thought to have become extinct, likely because of the environmental damage that changed Mandalore’s landscapes from lush green fields to barren terrain.

Despite the Mythosaur’s presumed extinction, the Armorer spoke of a prophecy that foretold the great Mythosaur rising once again to mark the start of a new Mandalorian age. Mandalorians do love using symbols as a way of choosing their leaders, so why not choose to believe that the Mythosaur will be tamed once more?

In the last season of The Mandalorian, Bo-Katan Kryze spotted the Mythosaur when she saved Din Djarin from drowning in the Living Waters. This moment had a profound impact on her; she even took on the Mythosaur as a second signet. Bo-Katan is not the only one to have made a connection with the Mythosaur, however.

At the end of The Mandalorian season 3, Din Djarin officially adopts Grogu and takes him on as his Mandalorian apprentice. This ceremony takes place next to the Living Waters, and , as the beast is shown opening its eyes seconds later.

Surely, Grogu being named and shown as a proficient swimmer in The Mandalorian and Grogu must have a deeper meaning, one that ties into the Mythosaur prophecy.

As we saw in The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu has officially left the ways of the Jedi behind (for now), choosing instead to embrace the life of a Mandalorian. That doesn’t mean he’ll never use the Force again, of course; it’s an instinctual thing, and the Force doesn’t belong solely to the Jedi.

We know that Grogu is adept at using the Force ability known as Taming Beasts, which allows Force-users to connect with and “tame” creatures of all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Grogu has used it before to sense the hyperspace-traversing purrgil and calm down terrifying beasts like Boba Fett’s rancor. In that regard, Grogu is a lot like the Jedi Ezra Bridger, who returned to Star Wars’ primary galaxy in Ahsoka.

Grogu is nothing if not curious. If he’s made a connection with the Mythosaur, odds are he’ll chase it, and potentially even jump into the water if he has to. , as Bo-Katan will likely become interested in the beast now, too.

If Grogu were to become the one to ride, or at the very least, tame the Mythosaur, it would make for an interesting narrative angle. How will that change his life with Din Djarin? What does it mean for his future as a Jedi? I can’t wait to discover what happens next when Din Grogu makes his big screen debut in .
