has launched new age-verification technology for users seeking more open chat features on its social-gaming platform. This new age verification system comes as part of the game’s "trusted connections" initiative. The latest move comes amid increasing state-level demands for age verification on online platforms. The age-screening technology is provided by identity verification company Persona. Several US states, including Utah, have recently implemented laws requiring app store owners like Apple and Google to verify the age of their users. Social media companies such as Meta, X, and Snap have agreed that app store operators should be responsible for age verification. However, Apple and Google have expressed differing views on this matter.

Roblox’s latest age-verification technology supports features intended for users aged 13 and older. The company’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, said that move aligns with the rollout of features “that we really believe are something that should be limited to an older audience — 13 and over.”The technology is designed to “confirm the age of our users and give them more tailored and age-appropriate features,” according to Ryan Ebanks, principal product manager for social products.

One new feature, “trusted connections,” will allow verified users to engage in private, unfiltered chats with others who have also passed the age check. Ebanks said these connections are users they “know and trust,” who can communicate without the usual filters for language that may be considered unsuitable for younger users. Teens aged 13–17 can add adults over 18 using a QR code or contact importer tool.Until now, private messages on Roblox were filtered to block profanity and other flagged content. Kaufman noted that age-screened access to unfiltered chats could allow teens and adults to continue using the platform for open communication, rather than turning to external apps. Roblox will still monitor conversations for potential risks.Users who have already verified their age using ID will not need to complete the facial analysis process. The company said the age-estimation software is “optional,” and teens can alternatively verify their age using a government-issued ID or, in the future, parental consent.Roblox also introduced new tools focused on privacy and well-being, including daily time limits, online status controls, a “do not disturb” mode, and a summary of time spent on the platform. With teen permission, parents can link accounts to view activity, trusted connections, and spending insights.
