Horror Unleashed! First Look at Christian Bale as Frankenstein in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Terrifying 'The Bride' Trailer

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s highly anticipated monster movie, “The Bride,” offering a glimpse into her unique take on a classic tale. Inspired by James Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein” and Mary Shelley’s seminal 1818 “Frankenstein” novel, Gyllenhaal's film reimagines the iconic story with a punk aesthetic, channeling elements reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde.
The official synopsis reveals a compelling narrative: a lonely Frankenstein, portrayed by Christian Bale, journeys to 1930s Chicago. There, he seeks the assistance of Dr. Euphronius to create a companion for himself. Their endeavor culminates in the reanimation of a murdered young woman, bringing "The Bride" to life, a role undertaken by Jessie Buckley. This new creation, however, transcends their intentions, sparking a passionate and explosive romance, attracting the unwelcome attention of the police, and igniting a radical social movement within the city.
The trailer for "The Bride" immediately establishes a dark and moody atmosphere, employing striking visuals of reds and whites set against a black backdrop. It shows the Bride's origin story, depicting her death after a fall, her subsequent exhumation, and her electrifying resurrection on the operating table. Upon awakening, she encounters Frankenstein, whose face is visibly stitched together, sporting an unsettling grin. The narrative quickly shifts to the pair on the run from law enforcement, with newspaper clippings hinting at their involvement in murders. The trailer is punctuated with classic, evocative one-liners like “Until death do us part” and subtle nods to Bonnie and Clyde, including a Ford Model 40.
The film boasts a star-studded cast alongside Jessie Buckley in the titular role and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster. Penélope Cruz features as Myrna, while Annette Bening, Julianne Hough, and Jake Gyllenhaal are also part of the ensemble. Notably, Maggie Gyllenhaal has also cast her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, in the film. Behind the scenes, the crew includes renowned talent such as “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher, “Cinderella” costume designer Sandy Powell, and “Elvis” production designer Karen Murphy. This marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort, following her critically acclaimed 2021 film “The Lost Daughter,” which garnered three Academy Award nominations and also featured Jessie Buckley and Peter Sarsgaard.
“The Bride” arrives amidst a resurgence of Frankenstein-inspired projects. 2025 is also poised to be a "Year of Frankenstein" with Guillermo del Toro's version for Netflix. Del Toro's film stars Oscar Isaac as the mad doctor and Jacob Elordi as the monstrous creature, with a formidable cast that includes Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. While del Toro's film is slated for a cinematic release on October 17 with a Netflix drop on November 7, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride” is set to release in theaters on March 6, 2026, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
