Horror as Man Plummets to Death from Hot Air Balloon in West Sussex Tragedy

A tragic incident in West Sussex has resulted in the death of a man who fell from a hot air balloon. Emergency services launched an extensive search operation after reports of the fall were received shortly after 9am on Friday, September 19, near Newpound Common, in Wisborough Green.

The search, which involved neighbourhood officers, police drones, search officers, and dogs, concluded when the man's body was sadly discovered in a field at 1:50pm. The man, who has not yet been formally identified, was part of a group on a balloon flight that originated from Billingshurst and was destined for Dunsfold.

Sussex Police confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway, and at this time, it is not being treated as suspicious. However, it is understood that the man is thought to have taken his own life by climbing out of the balloon's basket while it was at height.

The Commercial Ballooning Association (CBA) was informed of the serious incident. Jon Rudoni, chairman of the organization, stated that the entire event was captured on the flight video and has been submitted to the police, corroborating the account of a passenger taking their own life.

This profound incident underscores the importance of mental health awareness. For confidential support, individuals are encouraged to call Samaritans on 116 123, visit samaritans.org, or explore resources at https://www.thecalmzone.net/get-support.
