Hong Kong FilMart Buzz: New Deals, Premieres, and Major Collaborations Unveiled

The Hong Kong FilMart has once again served as a vibrant international platform, showcasing a diverse array of upcoming films, television series, and industry collaborations from across Asia and beyond. This year's event highlighted significant new projects from major players like Lotte Entertainment, PCCW Media in partnership with SK Global, and Reliance Media Entertainment, alongside pivotal discussions on regional cooperation and the evolving global screen economy.
Lotte Entertainment unveiled an exciting slate, featuring the highly anticipated Korea-Japan drama "Mr. Shota’s Last Business Trip." Directed by Lee Ju-hyoung, known for "Red Family," this film stars Korean sensation Jin-young and Japanese veteran Otani Ryohei. Set in Enoshima, Japan, the narrative explores an unlikely bond between a middle-aged salaryman and a heartbroken young Korean man who make a pact to deliver each other's unsent letters. The film is targeting a Q2-Q3 2026 release. Lotte also presented "Wild Sing," a K-pop comedy from "Secret Zoo" director Son Jae-gon, led by Gang Dong-won alongside Um Tae-goo, Park Ji-hyun, and Oh Jung-se, about a former mixed-gender group's comeback, also due in Q2-Q3 2026. Their lineup further included three Vietnamese titles: Phan Gia Nhat Linh's horror-comedy "Blood Moon Feast 8," Ha Vu’s "Double Couple Trouble" starring Dustin Nguyen, and Luk Van’s supernatural drama "Bus," which is set to open in Vietnamese cinemas soon. Additionally, the concert film "Blue Archive: The Orchestra in Cinema," directed by Jo Yoon-soo, which captures the "Sound Archive: The Orchestra 2025" performances, was highlighted, having already been released in Korea.
PCCW Media, in collaboration with SK Global—the studio behind international successes like "Crazy Rich Asians"—announced the global premiere of "The Season," an English-language revenge drama series. This six-part series, slated for June 2026, will be available to stream on Viu in Asia, the Middle East, and South Africa, and on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in the U.S., with Hong Kong audiences watching on Now TV. International distribution is managed by Fremantle. "The Season" delves into the opulent lives of Hong Kong’s elite Hext family, whose carefully constructed world is threatened by the arrival of Cola, a newcomer with a hidden agenda. The international ensemble cast features Jessie Mei Li as Cola, Toby Stephens and three-time Golden Horse Award winner Karena Lam as Christopher and Fiona Hext, along with Chris Pang, Celina Jade, Justin Chien, Yvonne Chapman, Kōki, and Lee Jae-yoon, with special appearances by Hong Kong stars Anson Lo and Marf Yau. Created and executive-produced by Yalun Tu, with Marialy Rivas as lead director, the series was entirely shot in Hong Kong, emphasizing the city's unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Reliance Media Entertainment arrived at FilMart with a robust slate designed for international markets, emphasizing genre storytelling. Their offerings include the action thriller "Furious Attack," directed by Huang Yi and starring martial arts experts Andy On and Philip Ng, following a former special forces soldier’s quest for his missing daughter in northern Myanmar. Another key title is "The Butcher’s Blade," a period action drama set in the Song Dynasty, directed by Liu Wenpu and produced by Wei Junzi, blending wuxia swordplay with crime thriller elements. The urban fantasy franchise "My Date With a Vampire" is being adapted into a feature film by its creator Chan Sap Sam, starring Bosco Wong and Karena Ng, revisiting the world of vampire hunters and immortal beings. Beyond scripted content, Reliance presented documentaries such as "The Hump," exploring the perilous WWII air route, and "Kungfu Stuntmen: Never Say No!", a tribute to Hong Kong’s iconic stunt performers. The slate also includes "Crazy Celeb Social," billed as Hong Kong’s first English-language reality series, set to stream on Amazon Prime, offering a glimpse into the lives of Asian celebrities. Various library titles like "The Grey Men" and action-fantasy films further rounded out their presentation.
Beyond individual projects, a significant development at FilMart was the formal agreement between the Shanghai Broadcasting Film & TV Producers Assn. and the Hong Kong Screenwriters’ Guild on March 19. This Memorandum of Understanding aims to foster deeper cooperation in content creation, talent cultivation, and technological exchange. The initiative comes at a critical juncture as both cities navigate the complexities of the global screen economy, facing challenges posed by artificial intelligence, short-form dramas, and evolving production models. During the Shanghai showcase, discussions ranged from cautious optimism to industry-wide introspection, with projects spanning 1930s espionage dramas, female-led historical epics, and fantasy series. Bilibili, for instance, highlighted its animation exports to over 190 countries. Ng See-yuen of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild underscored the urgency of such partnerships, noting Hong Kong’s dramatic decline in annual film output and emphasizing the potential for joint ventures to produce internationally appealing content. This collaboration signifies a strategic move to leverage combined strengths in a rapidly changing industry landscape.
The convergence of diverse cinematic talents and strategic partnerships at Hong Kong FilMart underscores its enduring role as a crucial nexus for film and television industries across Asia and the world, pointing towards a future of innovative storytelling and collaborative growth.
