Homeschooling Success: Child Earns £5k Monthly, Parents Face Backlash

Jason Graystone, a self-described "wealth enthusiast" and host of the "Always Free" podcast, has robustly defended his controversial decision to withdraw both his children from traditional schooling at the age of 14 to educate them at home. Graystone shares his life choices to inspire others and recently addressed criticisms regarding his approach to his children's education, stating that he does not believe school effectively serves children in modern times.
Graystone explained that his primary motivation for homeschooling was to shift away from subjects his children found unengaging. He observed that out of an entire school week, his children were only truly engaged with one or two lessons, viewing the rest as largely pointless. His philosophy centers on guiding his children to excel in areas they are naturally interested in, rather than forcing them through a curriculum they find irrelevant. He believes that much of what is taught in traditional schools today is for the sake of it, lacking practical application or genuine interest for many students.
This approach proved particularly successful for his youngest son, who was encouraged to pursue his passion for a creative career. Teaching himself editing and animation, the son developed a YouTube channel focused on teaching others how to edit. By the age of 16, he was proficient in creating reels and YouTube shorts, demonstrating a rapid acquisition of valuable skills outside conventional academic settings. Graystone proudly highlighted that his son is now earning a substantial £5,000 per month and has even become his personal editor, significantly boosting Graystone's own YouTube channel from 50,000 to half a million subscribers. This success contrasts sharply with his son's friends, who, two years later, are still pursuing their GCSEs without a clear sense of their future career paths.
However, Graystone's homeschooling decision has not been without its critics, especially after he shared a clip of his podcast discussion on TikTok. Commenters expressed divided opinions. Some questioned the breadth of education, arguing that such an approach might be suitable for aspiring YouTubers but neglects essential subjects like maths, science, and English, which are crucial for careers in medicine, law, or engineering and require academic dedication difficult to achieve at home. Others emphasized the importance of school for social development, arguing it's a vital environment for children to grow as individuals, make lifelong friends, and gain exposure to a wide range of subjects and peers. Concerns were also raised about excessive screen time for children.
In response to these criticisms, Graystone reiterated his stance, pointing to his youngest son's financial success. He stated, "My youngest is now earning £5k per month editing videos. Pretty decent. I don’t think he cares about other topics," underscoring his belief that practical skills and financial independence gained through self-directed learning can outweigh the benefits of a broad, traditional academic curriculum.
