The powerful gesture touched many Kenyans, and one generous well-wisher has now stepped in to change the family's life.
The grandmother, who has been caring for Mitchell and Hillary, students at the institution, was unable to pay the KSh 245,000 school fees arrears.
In a final act of hope, she arrived at the school with her grandchildren and six large chickens, hoping the school would accept them as part payment for the fees.
Photos shared widely online show the school principal, Mr. James Kabarak Kochia, carefully inspecting the chickens while the anxious family waited for his decision.
The emotional images captured the attention of thousands across the country.
When the incident went viral on social media, it sparked a national conversation as Kenyans expressed both admiration for the grandmother’s sacrifice.
Alumasa Shibutse wrote:
“This is the kind of difficult situation Kenyans go through to take their children to school."
Stephen Otieno added:
“Even Jesus once recognised the poor lady who gave all the pennies she had at her disposal.”
Dennis Orina remarked:
“These leaders who are fighting each other should redirect their energies to helping such needy cases.”
Irene Owade said:
"Let's appreciate the principal for the perseverance he/she had for the students. Kuna some principals that can't allow fees to accumulate that much.. May God bless him/her too."
Abdulrahmanooz Rahmai said:
"What a grandmother, she offered what she had, six chickens, and that's all she could afford to pay for her grandkids' arrears. So heart touching! May God bless them all."
Calls for additional support poured in, and the school released a Paybill number (522123) and Account number (58545Kmitchel/Hillary) for those wishing to contribute.
Among those moved was Nathaniel Odongo, a compassionate well-wisher who has since come forward to clear the entire school fees balance.
He went a step further and did full shopping for both Mitchell and Hillary, as well as their grandmother.
This was meant to ensure the family had not just educational stability, but also essential items and dignity.
Odongo, a philanthropic Kenyan man based in Norway, runs a CBO identified as Humanity Touch Organisation.
In a series of photos that got the family social media attention, the grandmother and her two grandchildren were captured in the office.
They sat pensively while the principal, James Kabarak, inspected the large chickens, trying to put a price tag versus the fee balance.
Evidently, the birds could not have cleared the arrears, but the grandma's idea left many Kenyans touched.
With this act of generosity, Mitchell and Hillary now have a renewed hope for their future, thanks to a grandmother’s undying love and a stranger’s open heart.
