Hollywood Mourns Loss of Iconic Casting Director Jackie Burch, Architect of 'Die Hard' and 'Breakfast Club' Talent

Jackie Burch, a highly respected casting director renowned for her influential work on iconic films such as “Die Hard,” “Sixteen Candles,” and “The Breakfast Club,” passed away on October 12 in Atlanta at the age of 74. Her family confirmed that her death followed a four-month battle with endometrial cancer. In a heartfelt statement, her family expressed their profound grief, saying, “We are heartbroken and in shock at the prospect of living without our vibrant, charming, funny, special, and incredibly loving mom. Her generous spirit touched so many lives – professionally and personally – and we are endlessly proud of the legacy she leaves behind.”
Born in Newburgh, New York, Burch initially pursued a career in deaf education as a teacher in Los Angeles. Her accidental foray into the film industry occurred while she was subbing for an assistant at Universal, sparking an interest that would shape her life’s work. She commenced her casting career in the early 1980s, contributing her talents to features like “Psycho II,” “Forbidden World,” “DC Cab,” and “Smokey and the Bandit Part 3.”
A significant portion of Burch’s career involved a fruitful collaboration with director John Hughes, for whom she oversaw the casting of seminal teen films including “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club,” and “Weird Science.” Her extensive filmography throughout the 1980s also boasted titles such as “The Running Man,” “Dick Tracy,” “Coming to America,” “Three Amigos,” “Mask,” and “42.” She also worked on “Hot Shots! Part Deux” and “Mafia.”
A crowning achievement in Burch’s career was her casting of Bruce Willis as the quintessential action hero John McClane in the 1988 blockbuster “Die Hard,” a film that went on to gross over $143 million globally. She continued her involvement with the franchise, casting its 1990 sequel, “Die Hard 2.” In the 2010s, Burch remained highly active, overseeing casting for major productions like “The Hunger Games” series, “Iron Man 3,” the critically acclaimed “Hidden Figures,” and “Bessie.” Her final project, “This Is the One They’ll Remember Me By,” is slated for release in 2026.
Beyond her prolific casting work, Jackie Burch was a dedicated and active member of both the Casting Society and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She is survived by her two daughters, Samy, a screenwriter, and Molly, a former singer-songwriter, along with her sons-in-law, Alex Mechanik and Dailey Toliver, and her twin sister, Janice Papolos. Her immense contributions to cinema and her vibrant spirit leave an enduring legacy in Hollywood.
