Hollywood Meets Music: Ryan Coogler & 'Wicked' Stars Snag Coveted Grammy Nods!

The Recording Academy recently announced the nominees for the 68th annual Grammy Awards, with a notable delay in the full disclosure of credits for the Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media category. Initially, on Friday, November 7, only the five nominated soundtracks were identified, and Timothée Chalamet was the sole individual named for his singing of Bob Dylan’s songs on the soundtrack to A Complete Unknown. However, on Tuesday, November 11, the Academy provided the complete list of credits, revealing additional key figures and their extensive nominations.

Ryan Coogler earned his third career Grammy nomination as one of the compilation producers for Sinners, sharing the credit with Ludwig Göransson and Serena Göransson. Coogler had previously been nominated in this category two years prior for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and also for Best Song Written for Visual Media for co-writing “Lift Me Up” from the same film. While not nominated in the latter category this year, three songs from Sinners—“I Lied to You,” “Pale, Pale Moon,” and the title track—did receive nominations. This makes Sinners one of only three films, alongside Waiting To Exhale (1997) and Barbie (two years ago), to garner three or more nominations for Best Song Written for Visual Media since the category’s inception in 1988. Coogler is also anticipated to receive Oscar nods for Sinners, which he directed, wrote, and co-produced, adding to his prior two Oscar nominations for producing Judas and the Black Messiah and for “Lift Me Up.”

Ludwig Göransson saw his Grammy nominations count for this year rise to five, all for his contributions to Sinners. In addition to Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, he received nods for Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Pale, Pale Moon” and “I Lied to You”), Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (encompassing film and television), and Best Instrumental Composition (“Why You Here / Before the Sun Went Down”). These nominations bring Göransson’s career Grammy total to an impressive 20. This marks the first Grammy nomination for his wife, Serena Göransson.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were also confirmed as nominees for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for their work on Wicked. Last week, they received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the musical’s iconic song, “Defying Gravity.” Erivo garnered an additional nomination for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Be Okay,” from her second studio album, I Forgive You. Grande's career Grammy nominations now stand at 20, while Erivo’s total five. Both stars had previously received Oscar nominations for their roles in Wicked and may secure further Oscar nods for Wicked: For Good, which would place them among a select group of actors recognized twice for portraying the same character in different films.

Stephen Schwartz also joined the list of nominees for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for Wicked. He had already received two other nominations for his work on the film last week: Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (film and television) and Best Instrumental Composition for “Train to Emerald City.” His career Grammy nominations now total 18. The Recording Academy clarified that the delay in announcing full credits for this specific category is due to their practice of conducting thorough research to determine eligibility criteria after the initial nominations are revealed.

The 68th annual Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 1 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The complete list of nominees for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, with added full credits, includes:
