The long-running annual competition — a fixture on the Ghana Hockey Association calendar for over 35 years — which was held at the Baba Yara Stadium, brought together top clubs from across the country in honour of the late Thomas Abankroh, affectionately known as T-Tommy. 

A former national star and dedicated promoter of hockey in the Ashanti Region, Abankroh passed away in April 1989, but his legacy continues to inspire generations.

With the Sapholda Greater Accra Hockey League on a brief break, GRA seized the moment to underline their dominance.

The Royal Ladies, fresh from defending their Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) title in Egypt earlier this year, were ruthless in the women’s round-robin competition.

They brushed aside Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Ghana Masters with identical 2-0 wins to clinch the trophy. Ghana Masters edged KNUST 1-0 to place second.

Under the guidance of the Head of Sports, Ebenezer Frimpong, GRA’s form was just as imposing in the men’s division.

Drawn in Pool A, they edged KNUST 1-0, overcame Ghana Masters 2-1, and defeated Bompata 2-0 to top their group with a perfect record.

In the final, they comfortably dispatched Kumasi Stadium Hockey Club 2-0, who themselves had edged out Exchequers, Bibiani and Cape Coast in Pool B.

The Masters division saw Multistix crowned champions after a commanding 2-0 victory over Sapholda in the final.

Multistix had earlier prevailed over Citizens 2-1 twice in a best-of-three group decider, while Sapholda topped Pool A with narrow wins against Ghana Gas (2-1) and Kumasi Seniors (1-0).

Beyond the silverware, the tournament also provided a valuable platform for talent development.

A curtain-raiser event featuring second-cycle schools from the Ashanti Region gave budding hockey talents the chance to shine, with senior players and coaches mentoring the next generation.
