History Made! Eniola Bolaji Becomes First African World No. 1 in Para-Badminton

Eniola Bolaji, Nigeria's prodigious talent in para-badminton, has officially been crowned the world's best women’s SL3 para-badminton player, a monumental achievement that places her at the summit of global rankings. The Badminton World Federation confirmed this historic feat on Tuesday, 17th February, cementing what her exceptional performances have consistently indicated. This accomplishment is particularly significant as Bolaji has become the first African athlete ever to reach the World No. 1 position in her specific category, marking a new era for African sports.
This prestigious ranking was propelled by a series of outstanding results, most notably her silver medal finish at the 2026 World Para Badminton Championship held in Bahrain. Displaying remarkable skill and determination, Bolaji navigated through intense competition to reach the final on Valentine's Day, where she ultimately faced Japan’s formidable Shino Kawai, succumbing in a 2-0 match. Despite the final loss, her performance in Bahrain, combined with a successful title defence at the Egypt International in January, amassed sufficient points to dethrone Indonesia’s Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh from the coveted top spot.
Bolaji is no stranger to making history on the international stage. Her journey to global recognition includes another pioneering moment at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where she secured a bronze medal. This made her the first African athlete to ever win a badminton medal at either the Olympics or the Paralympics. Her current ascension to World No. 1 is seen as a direct continuation of her consistent arrival on the elite scene, underpinned by unwavering discipline and a competitive spirit.
Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, lauded Bolaji's achievement as the biggest news of the year. He posited that she might have reached this significant milestone even sooner had she participated in more tournaments in the preceding year. Orbih highlighted that Bolaji's return to full stability and form in the last season laid a crucial foundation for her subsequent successes in 2026, noting her exceptional performances in two major tournaments this year. He further extended gratitude to key institutions whose support proved instrumental in fostering Bolaji's environment for success. The National Sports Commission, the Abia State Government, and GIG Logistics were specifically acknowledged for their contributions, enabling her to compete and excel at this extraordinary level.
