Hindalco Industries inaugurated its ₹500-crore electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune, on Friday, to meet the rising demand for lightweight and crash-resistant battery solutions and reduce import dependence.

The facility, spread across 5 acres, marks Hindalco's entry into EV component manufacturing. The company has already delivered 10,000 aluminium battery enclosures to M&M Ltd. The battery enclosure has been jointly developed with Mahindra.

Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries Ltd., said "Our Chakan facility represents a strategic shift in India's EV ecosystem from import dependence to high-performance, localised aluminium solutions," said Satish Pai.

Hindalco reports that it has achieved a weight reduction of up to 40 per cent compared to traditional steel designs, resulting in 8-10 percent improvement in the vehicle's driving range. It also enhances crash safety and significantly improves thermal management for battery cooling.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO for Automotive and Farm Sector at M&M Ltd, said "Mahindra has partnered with Hindalco in the creation of the EV journey. Their expertise in developing materials and strong engineering capabilities to offer new solutions have played a key role in developing efficient and sustainable battery enclosure solutions," said Rajesh Jejurikar.
