Fatal Accident Involving Fire Service Truck in Abuja

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) management has issued an apology after one of its rescue trucks collided with a private vehicle at the ECOWAS junction in Wuse 2, Abuja, resulting in the deaths of three teenagers and injuries to one other person. The incident occurred late Friday evening during a firefighting operation at Avenue Plaza, Banex. According to a statement released on Sunday by Momodu Ganiyu, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) controller, the service is experiencing profound regret over the tragic event.

Ganiyu explained that one of the fire trucks had exhausted its water supply and was en route to refill when the collision occurred. The truck was operating at a high speed with its siren activated before colliding with a Toyota Camry that was entering the junction from a connecting street.

The FFS acknowledged the immense pain and loss experienced by the families of the deceased. The service conveyed its heartfelt condolences, recognizing the tragic and untimely end to the victims’ promising futures. They also expressed hope for the swift recovery of the survivor, who is currently receiving medical treatment.

“As a service, we are sorry over the unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of three teenagers. We know that it is a difficult time for their family to cope, considering the age range of the children involved in this fatal accident,” stated the FCT controller. “The Federal Fire Service is aware that losing one’s children is a deeply painful experience that marks the radical change of the family’s life and involves a wide range of sad emotions.”

Jaji Abdulganiyu, the FFS controller-general, was immediately notified of the incident and has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. He will also personally lead a delegation to convey condolences to the bereaved families. The driver involved in the accident has been detained by the police, and personnel at the FCT rescue center have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Federal Fire Service has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and has expressed its deepest sympathy to all those affected by the tragic incident.
