Peter Obi Advocates for Nigeria as Africa's Beacon of Hope

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, addressed African youths at the Africa Together Conference at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. The conference theme was “The Making of Africa’s Future Presidents.” Obi shared his thoughts and experiences on his X handle, expressing his belief that Nigeria can become Africa’s beacon of hope with competent, committed, and compassionate leadership.
Obi stated he was honored to address the youths, who were drawn from different African countries and are passionate about making a positive difference in society. He expressed inspiration from their energy and determination, reaffirming his commitment to empowering them to shape Africa’s future.
The discussion centered on dismantling corruption and building a better future for the continent. Obi reiterated the importance of investing in human and national development areas, such as education and health, and emphasized that alleviating poverty can drive significant growth and development in any nation or continent.
Drawing comparisons with nations like China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, and the continent of Asia, Obi highlighted how committed leadership can transform a country and continent by prioritizing investments in these critical areas. He shared insights from his political journey, noting the challenges and opportunities associated with public service.
Obi maintained that Nigeria, and indeed Africa, can prosper if corruption and rascality in governance are dismantled and investments are prioritized in key development areas. He emphasized that with competent, committed, and compassionate leadership, Nigeria can serve as a beacon of hope, enabling Africa to rise as a global economic powerhouse.
He thanked the African Society at the University of Cambridge for hosting the event and expressed appreciation for the young leaders’ enthusiastic participation. Obi concluded by stating that as they strive to build a New Nigeria, everyone must participate in nation-building by ensuring that only competent, capable, and committed leaders with character and integrity are elected into public offices.
