Patience Jonathan Endorses Tinubu for 2027 Re-election

Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has publicly declared her support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election in 2027, dispelling any speculation that her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, might challenge him under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). She affirmed that she would campaign alongside Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the current First Lady, in the upcoming general elections. Mrs. Jonathan emphasized her belief in rotational leadership, calling it crucial for national unity.

Speaking at an event in Abuja where President Tinubu’s daughter and Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, received the Women Icon Leader of the Year Award from Accolade Dynamics Limited, Dame Jonathan reiterated her commitment to supporting the current administration. She lauded Folashade Tinubu-Ojo for her support of women and pledged unwavering support. "All the way, we are with you. No shaking. Direct us, and we will follow," she stated.

Dame Patience Jonathan clarified that she has no aspirations to return to Aso Rock Villa, Nigeria's seat of power. Instead, she expressed her dedication to campaigning with Senator Oluremi Tinubu. She emphasized her outspoken nature, stating, "If I don’t like something, I will say it. But if I like something, I die for it. I believe in one president. I believe in turn-by-turn. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back—so that the country can move forward."

Recounting her relationship with Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Mrs. Jonathan noted that their association predates the latter’s role as First Lady. She recalled working together during her time as a deputy governor's wife and a governor's wife. She also mentioned the support the Tinubus provided to her and her husband during their 2011 presidential campaign. "I cannot abandon my friend, whether you like it or not," she asserted, underscoring the importance of loyalty and friendship.

Addressing the issue of women's representation in politics, Dame Jonathan lamented the historical challenges in achieving 35 per cent affirmative action for women in governance, despite executive support during previous administrations like those of Presidents Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. She highlighted the dominance of men in elective positions and appealed for greater inclusivity. "May God touch their hearts to understand that we are their mothers, sisters, and friends. We are not trying to take power from them—we are trying to support them," she explained.

During her acceptance speech for the Women Icon Leader of the Year 2025 award, Mrs. Jonathan framed the honor as a collective recognition of the efforts of many individuals dedicated to advancing women’s health and economic empowerment. She said, “I am deeply humbled to receive this Women Icon Leader of the Year 2025 award. I accept it not just as a personal recognition, but as a testament to the efforts of countless women and men working for women’s well-being in Nigeria and beyond.”

Dame Jonathan also attributed her youthful appearance to her peace of mind since leaving Aso Rock. She humorously added that she wants to tease the current First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as she was teased during her time in the Villa. In summary, Mrs. Jonathan's statements indicate a strong endorsement of President Tinubu's leadership, a commitment to supporting the First Lady, and a continued advocacy for women's roles in governance and society.
