Police attribute firearms' loss to officers' poor knowledge of weapon handling

The Nigerian Police Force is grappling with a concerning trend of firearm losses among its officers, attributed to negligence and inadequate weapon handling skills. A wireless message from "TERROFOR ABUJA," obtained by Daily Trust, revealed that senior officers' "insensitive deployment" of personnel exacerbates the issue. This directive follows a Senate probe into the Auditor-General of the Federation's report on 3,907 missing assault rifles, during which the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and AIG Suleiman Abdul were questioned. While Force spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi claimed the rifles were stolen by hoodlums and disputed the AuGF's figures, the police high command has warned senior officers of consequences for future incidents. A directive mandates monthly arms and ammunition returns by the 23rd of each month, applicable to commands across Nigeria, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, FCT, and several other key locations.

In a separate development, the Nasarawa State Police Command announced the arrest of a fake soldier, Godswill Achili, linked to armed robberies between Abuja and Nasarawa State. SP Ranham Nansel, the command’s spokesperson, stated that Achili was apprehended in military camouflage and confessed to impersonation and armed robbery. Investigations revealed Achili is part of a syndicate operating in military uniforms using an unregistered black Toyota Avalon, targeting travelers, especially youths and students, between Keffi, New Karu, and the FCT. The criminals lure victims into their vehicle before robbing them of valuables. CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed urged public vigilance, noting that efforts are underway to apprehend two other members of the syndicate still at large.
