Heavy rain disrupts normal life in DK

Mangaluru: With widespread rain reported across Dakshina Kannada, instances of landslips, floods, house collapses, and other incidents were reported at various places on Thursday.Deputy commissioner Darshan HV visited the affected areas at midnight on Wednesday and on Thursday. The DC inspected the site of a mudslide on the main road to the Circuit House in the city. He then visited various locations in the city affected by rain damage and waterlogging. At Pumpwell Junction, he noticed water accumulation hindering traffic and instructed the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to take immediate action.

He also visited Kottara, Chowki, Kavoor, and other areas to reassure the affected residents.The DC visited the landslide site in the Mangaluru Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) area in Koncharu near Bajpe and provided instructions to the officials on necessary measures. Later, he inspected the waterlogged area reserved for the Indian Coast Guard at Kenjaru. The DC consulted with those affected by the rain damage and assured them of all necessary support and relief.

He advised local officials on the measures needed to ensure smooth water flow in the affected areas.

Discussions were held with officials on temporary and permanent measures to address traffic disruptions.A landslide occurred at Mannagundi in Kokkada village, Kadaba taluk, on National Highway-75 between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, causing a complete halt to vehicle traffic till afternoon. Dakshina Kannada SP Arun K advised vehicles travelling on this national highway to use alternative routes to facilitate the clearing of mud.

The mudslide on the Circuit House road late on Wednesday led to the disruption of traffic movement on one lane.

Several bikes and a car were damaged after a wall collapsed at Mary Hill in the city. A house at Shivaji Nagara in Pachanady collapsed due to heavy rain. In Yeyyadi, a house was damaged due to the wall collapse. An artificial flood situation prevailed at many places in the city. Several residential areas in Surathkal were inundated.Surathkal in Mangaluru and Thenka in Kaup of Udupi recorded the highest rainfall in 24 hours till Thursday morning. According to IMD data, Surathkal recorded 296.6mm of rainfall and Thenka received 277.5mm of rain. Heavy rains were also reported at Hejmadi, Belapu, Padubidri, Mudarangadi (in Udupi district), Balthila, Neermarga, Bajpe, Aikala, Mallur, Bala, Ullal, Kotekar, Kinya, and Yekkur in Dakshina Kannada.

However, the intensity of rain reduced later in the afternoon.Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority has warned people not to go near the sea, rivers, rivulets, streams, waterfalls, vented dams, and footbridges during heavy rain. The authority has advised people not to go to trekking spots, hills, and hilly terrain where possibilities of landslips are more. It also cautioned people against touching electric poles and transformers.
