Heat's Playoff Hopes Dented: Miami Falls to Raptors, Faces Play-In Gauntlet for Fourth Time

The Miami Heat are in the play-in tournament again, for the fourth year in a row.
They didn’t want this. Bam Adebayo even said the team is “better than being in the play-in.” But after a heavy 121–95 loss to the Toronto Raptors, they missed their chance to finish in the top six.
Now, their only way into the playoffs is through the play-in.
Erik Spoelstra didn’t hide his frustration after the loss, one that also marked their third defeat to the Toronto Raptors this season.
“We’re disappointed,” he admitted, pointing out that the team lacked the competitive edge needed in such a crucial moment.
He also made it clear they weren’t thinking ahead just yet, they still have work to do.
Even though the play-in tournament is still fairly new, the Miami Heat have already become regulars, now tied for the most appearances, showing just how often they’ve found themselves fighting to stay in the race.
The Miami Heat are used to the pressure of the play-in, and they usually handle it well.
Like Atlanta and Golden State, they could be heading into their fourth straight play-in. But Miami has a strong track record.
Last season, they won two tough road games as a No. 10 seed to reach the playoffs, and in both 2023 and 2024, they went 1-1 and still made it through.
Their 2023 run was the most impressive, they turned a play-in spot into a trip to the NBA Finals before losing to the Denver Nuggets.
This season hasn’t been as strong, though, the Heat have struggled against top teams in the East, with a 13–20 record. Still, they’ve proven they can perform when it matters most.
Spoelstra remains optimistic about his team's spirit, noting, "Our guys bounce back."
However, he underlined the critical need for the team to elevate their performance. "But we have to rise to the level of the competition.
That's the bottom line right now. We have these opportunities to meet our competition and we come up short," he concluded, highlighting the challenge ahead for the Heat as they prepare for another high-stakes play-in tournament.
