Heartbreaking! Veteran Singer Daddy Fresh Reveals Two-Year Battle with Illness, Pleads for Public Support

Veteran Nigerian musician, Innocent Onyebuchi, widely known as Daddy Fresh, has made a poignant public appeal for assistance, revealing a severe health and financial crisis after being bedridden for over two years. His plight came to light when Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Kunle Afod, visited the ailing artist in the hospital and shared an emotional video of their encounter on Facebook.

Afod, deeply affected by Daddy Fresh’s condition, urgently called for support, stating, “Daddy Fresh must not die – one of Nigeria’s finest artists is in a terrible condition.” The video depicted a once vibrant singer now appearing frail and weak, struggling with recognition, initially mistaking Afod before realizing who his visitor was. Daddy Fresh expressed his surprise and questioned if Afod was a divine messenger, given his unexpected presence.

Speaking on his deteriorating health, Daddy Fresh disclosed he has been battling a multitude of severe ailments, including critical kidney and liver problems, neuropathy, and significant vision loss. He revealed that he has undergone an operation on one eye, which tragically remains sightless, and the other eye also faces severe issues. Additionally, he experiences hallucinations, stating, “I started hallucinating, seeing people, those I know and those I don’t. I talk directly to them, but other people no dey see them. This one don too much o.”

The musician further explained his immediate medical needs, which include urgent blood transfusions. “Now, I need blood transfusion. I need to buy some pints of blood. They said they need that one immediately, like two or three packs of blood because my blood dey very low, 25%,” he pleaded. His physical state has rendered him almost completely immobile; he cannot stand or walk without support, leading to frequent falls and resulting injuries on his face and knees.

Beyond his medical emergency, Daddy Fresh also disclosed profound financial distress and social abandonment. He lamented that he faces imminent eviction from his apartment due to unpaid rent, having received a quit notice. He expressed despair over not being able to sell even personal items like his television to cover expenses, stating, “Shebi na who dey okay go know where he go sell one or two things to use pay but I no sabi do am but I wan close eye sell, even if na my television.” He also hinted at abandonment by his partner, saying, “Madam? Madam ke? Them don waka their waka o.”

Once a prominent figure in Nigeria’s reggae and hip-hop music scene, Daddy Fresh suggested that his prolonged illness might have spiritual undertones. He believes his survival so far has confounded his detractors, stating, “They just want to kill themselves, not me. The enemies are waiting to hear how far. All the while that I haven’t cried out to the public, they are confused, thinking if what they did has not worked.”

Despite his suffering, Afod’s unexpected visit brought Daddy Fresh a renewed sense of hope, which he interpreted as a potential divine sign of a turnaround. After providing some initial financial support, Kunle Afod pledged to return and launched a heartfelt appeal to the public and the entertainment community for urgent intervention. He highlighted Daddy Fresh’s legacy as a “very handsome. Lovely voice. This man was a fantastic music artist” and implored Nigerians, entertainers, and the music industry to unite and help keep him alive.

This is not Daddy Fresh’s first public acknowledgment of his health struggles. In February 2024, he had revealed that he had been suffering from a partial stroke for nearly 30 months at that time. He previously shared that simple gestures like a “hello, how are you doing?” message offered significant comfort amidst his severe pain, expressing faith that he would eventually recover.
