Heartbreak in Nigeria: Dangote Group and Celebrities Mourn Phyna's Sister
Ruth Otabor, the sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Josephine "Phyna" Otabor, tragically passed away on August 31, 2025, at approximately 6:30 a.m., following severe injuries sustained in a road incident. The accident, which involved a truck linked to the Dangote Group, occurred on August 13, 2025, in Auchi, Edo State, just six days after Ms. Otabor had graduated from Auchi Polytechnic. The incident left her with critical injuries, necessitating the amputation of one leg.
Following the accident, Phyna had publicly accused Dangote Cement Plc of negligence and alleged foul play in the handling of her sister's medical care. She had appealed to representatives of the Dangote Group to fly her sister abroad for advanced medical treatment, explaining that Ruth had been transferred to Lagos with the expectation of being taken overseas for proper care. Phyna, a singer and reality star, expressed her belief that if her sister were related to the Dangote Group's Chief Executive, Aliko Dangote, she would not have been left in the hospital where she ultimately died.
In response to the tragedy, the Dangote Group issued a statement expressing profound sadness over Ruth Otabor's passing. The company affirmed that since the accident, its officials and insurance partners had been providing continuous support to Ruth and her family, covering all financial and medical expenses. The statement further detailed that arrangements had been made for Ruth to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors. "Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth's brave fight to live, we lost her today," the statement read, adding that "At Dangote Group, safety, accountability, and compassion remain at the core of our operations. We remain committed to strengthening our safety systems and supporting those affected in moments of tragedy."
The news of Ruth's death sparked an outpouring of condolences from celebrities and fans alike. Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw expressed her grief, writing, "Ehhh God, May God comfort your family at this difficult time." Former BBNaija housemate Wanni conveyed deep sorrow, stating, "Oh no! I'm so pained, No! No! Ruth went through too much pain, may her soul rest in peace." Media personality Hero Daniels and reality TV star Daniella Peters also offered their sincere condolences. Fans and well-wishers have since flooded Phyna's social media pages with messages of support, prayers, and comfort for her and her family during this trying period.
The Otabor family, through Eko Solicitors & Advocates, released a statement confirming the passing, requesting privacy as they grieve their painful loss. The tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and corporate responsibility in Nigeria.
