He-Man Creator Roger Sweet Passes Away at 91, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Masters of the Universe

Roger Sweet, the visionary creator behind the iconic He-Man action figure, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91 after a courageous battle with dementia. Sweet's groundbreaking work led to the inception of the beloved ‘80s cartoon series, “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” which captivated a generation.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Sweet served as the lead designer for Mattel’s esteemed Preliminary Design Department. His critical contributions came at a pivotal time for the toy manufacturer, following a significant corporate decision in 1976 to decline an opportunity to produce toys for the "Star Wars" franchise. This decision proved to be a major misstep for Mattel, as the "Star Wars" toy line, handled by Kenner Products, became incredibly successful after the release of "A New Hope" in 1977. In the aftermath, Mattel faced considerable challenges in developing a popular action figure based on original intellectual property that could compete in the market.

It was in this environment that Sweet's ingenuity shone. Tasked with generating a fresh and compelling idea, he embarked on an experimental process. He famously created a prototype by affixing a Big Jim action figure into a dynamic fighting pose and augmenting its physique with clay to create a more muscular, powerful appearance. This innovative prototype became the foundational design for He-Man, which Sweet successfully presented to then-CEO Ray Wagner, securing its path to production.

He-Man officially debuted in markets in 1982, quickly gaining traction. The following year, in 1983, Mattel collaborated with Filmation to launch the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" cartoon series. This animated companion project was designed to complement the immensely popular He-Man toyline and further expand the franchise's reach. The show transported viewers to the magical realm of Eternia, chronicling the adventures of the young Prince Adam. Through the power of the mystical Sword of Power, Adam would transform into He-Man, the formidable warrior of the galaxy, by uttering the now-legendary phrase, “By the Power of Grayskull! I have the power!” The series enjoyed a successful run, airing for 130 episodes from 1983 to 1985, solidifying He-Man's place in pop culture history.

The enduring legacy of He-Man continues to resonate, with a modern reboot of the franchise underway. Amazon, MGM, and Mattel are collaborating on an upcoming action film titled “Masters of the Universe,” slated to hit theaters on June 5. The film features Nicholas Galitzine in the leading role as He-Man, alongside a star-studded cast including Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms. Roger Sweet is survived by his wife, Marlene.
