Hacks' Bittersweet End: Ava and Deborah's Journey Reaches Its Inevitable Conclusion

The acclaimed HBO comedy series 'Hacks' concluded its five-season run, with co-creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs having meticulously planned the ending from the show's inception six years before its 2021 premiere. The series, celebrated for its sharp writing, complex storytelling, and superb performances by Jean Smart as the aging comedian Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder as the progressive writer Ava Daniels, was intentionally brought to a close on the creators' own terms. This decision aimed to maintain the show's high quality and avoid overstaying its welcome, despite the fervent growth of its fanbase and critical accolades.
The finale itself is described as one of the series' most intense, emotional, and unpredictable episodes, bringing Deborah and Ava to confront devastating truths that ultimately reinforce their indelible, platonic bond. Fans were treated to a satisfying conclusion, complete with callbacks and Easter eggs, such as the humorous reveal of Deborah's hand size compared to Ava's and the heartfelt return of the phrase 'big, brave girl'. While Aniello and Statsky expressed sadness about closing such a significant chapter of their lives, they conveyed immense pride in how Ava and Deborah's story culminates, leaving the audience with the two protagonists laughing and strolling in the City of Love.
A major storyline in Season 5 revolved around Deborah's health and the possibility of her death. This narrative arc was deliberately teased as far back as Season 2 with the mention of progesterone packets, and further emphasized through Deborah's 'angelic death idea' at the season's start and the end of Episode 7. This design ensured that when Deborah's mass was revealed, it felt natural rather than abrupt. The storyline explored profound themes of control and the right to life and dignity at its end, a topic Deborah and Ava passionately debated from their differing viewpoints. Deborah's obsession with control clashed with Ava's devastation at the thought of losing someone she deeply loves, escalating the stakes beyond their usual disagreements.
Regarding the actors' involvement, Jean Smart, who portrays Deborah Vance, reportedly had a different vision for her character's finale, dreaming of a 'Marty-Deborah wedding' endgame, which the creators confirmed was 'not in the cards for us'. Despite this, Smart was highly complimentary of the actual ending once it was filmed. Hannah Einbinder, on the other hand, preferred to learn the finale's events cold during the table-read. The co-creators generally avoid giving extensive input to their lead actors beforehand, preferring to capture their 'first impulse' on camera, especially in emotionally charged scenes like Deborah's revelation to Ava and their intense Paris hotel room negotiation. These pivotal moments, including Ava's realization in the club that she couldn't let Deborah go, were critically praised for their direction and the actors' 'locked-in' performances.
The ultimate turning point for Deborah, leading her to scrap her initial plan, occurred when she impulsively wrote down a joke. This act reignited the 'spark' for creation and laughter, which the creators identified as the 'identical spark' from the pilot episode. This moment underscored the series' central theme: life is worth living when you are having fun, laughing, and creating with friends and collaborators. The series concludes with Deborah realizing the life-affirming power of this bond and the joy of creating new material with Ava. While rumors of a spin-off persist, the creators suggested it is unlikely, emphasizing their satisfaction with the definitive conclusion of 'Hacks', all five seasons of which are available to stream on HBO Max.
